Comments Thread For: Hooker: I Was Shocked; Thought They Would Rob Me in England

Maurice Hooker didn't expect to leave the ring Saturday night with the WBO junior welterweight title. The Dallas native knew he had out-boxed Terry Flanagan in their 12-round, 140-pound title bout and deserved the victory. Hooker just didn't think he would win a decision in Flanagan's hometown of Manchester, England.

He deserved it, he fought a good fight. This card however:

      Illinois’ Jerry Jakubco (117-111).
      was ridiculous.

Glad he got the decision. I thought he done enough but like he said, being the away fighter in a some what close fight. It was close but right decision. Also did not like Flanagan use of his head. Should have had a point taken away.

to be fair who was the last fighter who got robbed in England?

I can only think of Beltran?

To be fair, we're alright over here. We don't need to rob fighters because there are plenty of tv dates and plenty of interest that a loss isn't a big deal. Only AJ and Tyson Fury are unbeaten established fighters anyway.

It also serves the game better over here if we get the rightful winner. It was a close fight and the right man won.

I think you're pretty likely to get a fair shake wherever you fight.

Worth noting this fight wasn't just in England it took place a few miles from Flanagan's home.

He won the fight fair and square

Stood his ground and landed the better punches . Sometimes uk judges award the pressure fighter the tight rounds but hooker hardly backed off

The right guy won on the night

Lets start with the guy Selby "beat" on a cut/scratch. Then Brook running from Carson Jones and getting the call, and those bantam keep away specialist, all they have to do is make it to the final bell. The Home town edge is big in the UK.

British judges are not usually a problem, British referees on the other hand...

Jones fight was not a robbery. I watched it live. Jones won the later rounds which can give the impression that the decision is worse than it was.
Not getting a decision in a close fight doesn't mean you are robbed just because you are fighting away from home.

I can think of a lot more robberies which happened in the US than the UK in recent years, but it might be just because they are higher profile so they spring to mind more easily.
