Suico Gets WBA Title Shot

Suico has a date with Silverio Ortiz in the Pac-Larios undercard.

Ortiz has taken out only seven foes in 17 fights that he won. He has had 9 losses. He has been stopped only twice, but both stoppages were not KOs. Both were corner retirements (one on advice of the ring doctor).

Ortiz has faced much better (far and away) quality opponents: Jorge Paez (to whom he officially lost only after a review of the tapes by the commission; he took out Paez while the ref was separating them), Mike Anchondo (doctor advised Ortiz's corner to stop the fight in the 4th), Steve Forbes (lost to Forbes by UD), Daniel Seda (for Seda's second loss after losing to Casamayor by UD although both Seda and Casa tasted canvass in the 5th), Ricardo Dominguez (for Dominguez's first and only loss) and David Diaz who currently holds the IBA Light title.

Ortiz, though shorter than Suico by an inch, now usually campaigns at Jr. Welter, while Suico is Jr. Light.

It is best for Suico not to think of Juan, yet.

Edit: It is helpful to remember that Suico failed to stop the small Israel Melendez who had been stopped some three years earlier by Oscar Larios in two.

It beats me too, pal. When I first saw the story of the Diaz schedule, I smiled, then checked the calendar if this is really 2006 and not 1906 when fighters used to go in every couple of weeks or so.

Thirteen days separating the two fights. That can mean they are aborting the appearance in Manila in favor of the title shot. Or, if they're serious about lining up the two fights, Suico's people can only be kidding themselves. The joke can be mortal to their ward's career. In spite of his 9 losses, Ortiz won't just roll over. He has met some of the world's better fighters.
