Comments Thread For: Abner Mares Sees Eventual Move To 130, Eyes Gervonta Davis

Abner Mares (31-2-1, 15 KOs) is less than a week away from his high stakes rematch with WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (34-1-1, 19 KOs). Santa Cruz won a twelve round majority decision over Mares in August of 2015 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

I would be interested in seeing him move up if he loses. Lots of good fights at 130, Roman, Vargas, Gamboa, Sosa, Gonzalez 2, Salido, Castellanos, Corrales etc.

I still can't shake the Gonzalez loss off. I think Abner would get smoked against Tank.

I'd love to see this one. It'd be exciting for a few rounds.

My answer is the name, the challenge, and eventually the money. No fighter his size thinks, unless they are lunatic, that they'd be going into an easy fight against Davis.

Gamboa can't make a healthy 130 no more...

Mares has always been small at 126 and will be much too small to compete with a lot of 130 pounders. Mares could beat Jezreel Corrales, Jason Sosa, Miguel Roman, and Robinson Castellanos. And Jesus Cuéllar obviously. Roman and Castellanos are a waste of time though.

Davis, Berchelt, Machado, and Vargas are way too big for Mares. Davis not so much height-wise, but he's naturally much bigger than Mares in terms of mass.

I think Mares will find a way to upset Santa Cruz on Saturday. After that he should go after Oscar Valdez. Big fight and very winnable for him. If he gets by Valdez then there's Frampton and Santa Cruz III.
