In fairness to our American brethren, Rugby is actually called Rugby football - because it's a variation of the rules of "association football" (soccer) which started in the town of Rugby in Warwickshire. People called it Rugby football because it was what people played at Rugby school instead of soccer.
American football is called American football for the exact same reason. It's the field game that people would play instead of soccer in America. But you can't exactly shorten the name down to "American" because it sounds ****ing dumb. "Anyone up for a game of American?"
So in both cases the name refers to where the variation of the rules of football originated, it's just that rugby dropped the "football" from it's name whereas American football kept it.
The argument that:
"American's are so dumb they call it football when you barely use your feet"
can also be answered by this.
But you make a good point in that rugby compares favourably to American football in terms of sheer violence! The injury rate is insane.
... This is a boxing forum, right? What the hell am I writing about this for?
