  • Clearing up Gatti vs Gamache

Guys I've read a bunch of threads regarding that new rules for weighin's should be put in, especially after the recent Castillo and Cotto fights. People use the Gatti vs Gamache example as why there needs to be rules.

However what people dont realize is that its not the natural weight gain after the weigh-in that Gamache is mad about, its that he contends Gatti NEVER MADE weight.

"The suits allege Russo let Gatti step off the scale even as the needle went all the way up, and then ignored complaints by Gamache's handlers. Less than 24 hours later, HBO unofficially weighed the boxers again, and Gatti came in at 160 pounds, while Gamache weighed 145."

I still think that if a guy sacrafices and makes weight at the weigh-in then it shouldn't matter what he weighs come fight night.

I agree with you that after a guy makes weight, no weight gain limitations need to be set, but really I like your quote from a Castillo fan... f'n ridiculous.

Oh okay, someone had posted that he weighted 168 or so, & I just didn't see how that was possible, but if it wasn't that much, and if the weight-in was questionable then it makes more sense to me now.

There was no unoffical fight time weigh-in of Gatti vs Gamache

I really don't think Gatti made the weight that night. There really was some funny business in there that night. I remember watching the demolition and thinking "We need to go back to same day weigh-ins". The same rule that was instated to protect fighters is beginning to endanger them. If one man weighs 20 pounds more than his opponent, I'm sorry but that isn't right.

They are fighting at welterweight for a reason. They shouldnt be able to come 60 pounds over the designed weight limit, its not fair.

Just to further clarify, I'm not taking any stand in the Gatti vs Gamache fight.

All I'm saying is that Cotto, Margarito and Hatton are referred to as being too big for there weight divisions and are often villafide because of it. The persons demonizing them often refers to the Gamache vs Gatti fight as evidence of there crime without knowing all the facts. Cotto, and Hatton always make weight and what ever weight they blow to after is strictly water weight not muscle. Gamachi's contention is that Gatti never made weight.

I have first hand experience on this matter, not as a boxer but as a wrestler at a high level of competition. Its not like guys just lose weight 1-2-3. It is very very hard especially at an unnatural weight which is 10%-15% below your natural weight. There are a lot of draw backs such as decreased stamina, strenght, decreased concentration and lightheadness i.e. stuff kinda feels a bit surreal almost dream like.

There are enough con's to dropping to much weight that it balances out some of the gains one gets from coming in big. I also guess that my wrestling background leaves little sympathy for guys that didn't have the discipline to cut as much weight as I did and who I absolutely knew should've been at a lower weight class.
