When you call a pro boxer a coward....

In relation to the bum thing, I kind of look at it how boxing, for the most part, is a poor sport. Some boxers really do live in poverty, come from poverty, and many of them actually work 2nd jobs.I can see calling a fighter a coward, in relation to other fighters who show much more more heart. A better way to put it, would be to say that a guy is no warrior like a Gatti or Ward or Corrales. That type of thing.
And boxing fans come from all kinds of backgrounds. A Navy Seal has faced far greater odds than any boxer has and well, has every right. A software designer who's afraid of his own shadow has no right, for sure. I think most people who realize how risky any fight is, don't often call boxers cowards unless it's in relation to a braver boxer.
As far as bums, I've always thought it was funny to be honest. This society's gotten too weak with the language. You think there's any boxer out there, regardless of success, who hasn't been called a bum? It comes with the territory. i figure it rolls off their backs tbh. It's like being a Marine and called jarhead. It's just a jab. No big deal.
Some boxers, just really do suck. You know the type. The guy who's a middleweight, but has that thick layer of fat on him that makes him look like a heavyweight. He's got a losing record and he's there to lose. 4 round fight and he's fighting a hot prospect. Fights like he doesn't have a heartbeat. Running around, doing clown antics because he knows he's losing. Probably getting a few hundred dollars for a nights work. THAT guy really is a boxing bum.
But most of the time now, yeah it's used for a fighter you don't like, even though they probably make more money than you. Lol.Comment

Well, when you start limiting speech, all the fun dies.

To be fair to Floyd, he was retired and wasn’t calling Conor out. Conor wanted Floyd, Conor thought his punching power in MMA would translate to boxing, but in the end he made tens of millions of $$$, so...If a firefighter refuses to go in a burning building to do his job is he not a coward?
you fucking nerds put these boxers on a pedestal like the punk ass hoes you fools are.
Is Mayweather a coward? Conor McGregor came to boxing to fight him under his rules but mayweather refuses to go to mma and fight Conor under mma rules?Comment

This! This has driven me crazy the last 34 years as a fan, the people I have seen say it in person are the ones where inside you know "if fists start flying up in here you'll be under the table." Same thing for tomato cans. Mofo's act like it's an easy choice to get punched in the face for a living. If you have a boxing license, you earn most of your income from professional fights then you deserve respect until you desecrate/disrespect the sport.Comment

I guess you also believe that someone needs to be a boxer themselves in order to judge the boxing ability of fighters today. If a fighter is ducking other fighters, he's a coward relative to other fighters (not posters since most of us did not choose fighting as a profession). Comparing the cowardice of boxers to posters is like comparing the boxing ability of boxers to posters who do not box for a living: the comparison is irrelevant.Comment

I went to both of those fights as a paying customer (including travel, hotel and ticket) so I can understand this sentiment but still personally hold back from it.I think there are occasions that warrant it. Walters and Rigo quitting before they were ever in danger is fair game. If I spent my money to go see a fight and the guy I was backing quit like that, I'd be pretty pissed. They weren't brave enough to give their fans their money's worth, or even get close to actual danger.
But, for the most part, it's severely abused. A guy like Ward goes UP a division to take on the boogeyman of boxing, beats him, gives him a rematch, and beats him again. Anyone who calls that dude cowardly is just trash who has no integrity.
People try to call Floyd a coward for not fighting Margs. They said Loma was a coward for not fighting Rigo. People who have never accomplished anything seem to find it real easy to throw around the phrase "coward". I've been in a lot of street fights and I've also trained with fighters in the gym and it's much more scary to get in there with people who actually train in the art of fighting than it is to beat up some dude outside a bar. Pro boxers are generally very strong willed people.
It's a term used far too much from armchair critics who don't even pay to see a fight live. Calling a fighter a coward IMO is even more tedious than saying a fighter was "exposed" because he beat their guy or got punched in the face or calling a fighter a bum (sometimes just because they dislike him or his fans) or when somebody who doesn't even pay to go see live fights calls someone more qualified with a better opinion a "casual".
Unfortunately this place is FULL of those types.Comment
