"The" rule is NOT universal, boxing in the USA is governed by the separate states commissions. Most employ the "stop count until the standing fighter retreats to a neutral corner. Others will have the ref "pickup" the count from the time keeper after handling the standing fighter.

When I starter handling fighters through the country I learned very early that I had to know the rules right down to corner conduct. Some states you couldn't enter the ring and can only work from the apron, crazy stuff!

The liver shot cuts in like a stab. Linares stretched the count, tried to get up at the last second, although quite late even though it was a long count, was done, but still said in the post fight interview that he wanted to go on, which he clearly didn’t/couldn’t, and tried to blame the ref on a bad stoppage, instead of admitting it was No Mas for him...

In one of the videos I saw , when he gets hit , you can see the pain in his face
He can say whatever he wants but there was no way he could continue
