Today I was going through my tapes and I came upon a recent one with a few fights on it. I watched Floyd vs Zab and Im even more impressed with Floyd now. If any of you have the fight on tape then go back and watch it, now that its been awhile. I came away thinking that alot of people on here are crazy, thinking that Floyd has lost alot of speed at 147. He was still crazy fast in that fight. He just didnt fight a overall speed game in this fight because he decided just to slowly Zab down all night. He wouldve fought at a faster pace against someone like Margarito but his plan was just to slowly walk down the Southpaw and keep pressure on him. It wouldve made no sense for him to fight Zab at a wild fast pace when Zab is also speedy, has mad power, and is a slick southpaw. He wouldve ran into something that couldve ended him. I remember when Floyd fought Brussels at 140 people said he didnt look fast. Again, it was just the way he fought because against Gatti & Chop he was super fast.
He also never fully let his hands go. All he threw were short punches just to land on Zab because he was a very fast Southpaw with alot of power. I actually came away feeling that it might have been Floyd's best performance. Sure, he didnt shut Zab out or completely dominate like he did Chico or Gatti but the way he lost 3 of the first 4 rounds and then came back to systematicaly break Zab down was awesome. I was watching him fight and was thinking that his skills are unmatched.
If you think about what Pound for Pound really means then there is no way you couldve put the Taylor-Wright winner ahead of him. Pound for Pound means if 2 guys are the same weight then who would win. There is no way that if Winky were the same weight as Floyd that he would win. Watching that Zab fight you could see that Floyd does everything better. He's faster, has more power(pound for pound), and his D was sick. We all know Floyd's defensive style but he can change it for any fight, any time during the fight, and to any style. Alot of the Zab fight he held his hands up like Winky. I compared this fight with Winky's last week because I forgot how Floyd walked Zab down just like Winky was trying to do Taylor. They both used the same style but you could see that Floyd overall had so much more skill then Winky in every aspect.
I came away surprised how some on here criticized him for that fight. That was brilliant boxing and the way he just switched his game plan up was awesome. I also think he is alot more powerful at 147 then most think. He still stopped Mitchell and may have stopped Zab but he definatly wouldve stoped Zab if he was a righty. Floyd still landed some punches with pop but he never loaded up the whole fight. If this Margarito fight comes off then I bet alot of people on here will be surprised how much power Floyd has and how fast he is. Alot of it just had to do with the way he was fighting Zab. He had to be much more precise against him and keep everything short and tight. From what I saw on that tape, I dont see anyone at 147 even coming close to him. Cotto and Hatton definatly arent ready.
I think the Margarito fight will happened but Im actually getting worried about Floyd now and mainly his next fight, no matter who it is. Floyd has been chasing Oscar forever for that big money fight and all the fame it will bring. I think he got to the point where he thought he might never get it. Then he finaly got in the perfect position. Everything lined up and it looked like it was happening. Now it probally wont. I think that may be depressing for him. It wouldve been better if Oscar never led him on. Floyd wouldve took the 8mil to fight Margarito and wouldve been happy. Now, the 8mil seems like 1 mil when you compare it to the over 20 something he was going to make from the Oscar fight. Thats hard to recover from. He'll have to fight atleast 3 times to makeup what he wouldve made. Maybe traning and everything else gets harder. I could see him looking ****ty in his next fight but I think he'll be ok because Oscar hasnt made his retirment official, so Floyd will still think he has a chance.
I think he probally wants to kill Oscar right now but will hold off ripping him just incase Oscar still wants to fight him in early 07.
PS-I also rewatched the Mosley-Vargas fight. That fight was better then I remembered and Im excited about the rematch. As good as I thought Floyd looked, those 2 still looked good at 154 and would maybe give Floyd "some" problems with there size and power. If any of you have the Zab fight then go back, rewatch it, and tell me if your opinion of that fight has changed any. Thats if it was negative in the 1st place
