Yeah, even late on his career when his hands were shot he made the most of what he had and put on a show. There was a real swagger to the way he fought. The whipping he gave to Jeff Lacy is great to rewatch, I've never seen anyone in a ring look quite as dejected and miserable as Lacy did by the end.

His constant volume and pursue with the ability to turn odd angles and distance, yea. Unfortunately, he gained international fame in his later years when his hands were shot and his punches got slappy at times.
Still, my favorite fights to re-watch are Calzaghe fights. The guy had an infectious energy.

His style was like death by 1000 cuts, his volume and energy were great to watch.

I believe he just trained to be able to throw loads of punches and overwhelm people later on in his career, he was all cardio and didn't even lift weights or spar much.

Yeah. He was the real deal, i just wish he had fought better opposition in his prime before his hands were done. He was known as a puncher coming through the ranks before his hands went.

He was already mid 30s and had shot hands when he beat the undefeated prime Kessler. So imagine what a prime Joe could've done if he had better opposition. I always say his talent and ability were enough to make him a great but he never really had the desire to prove it for too long. or maybe badly managed, i don't know.

In terms of his style, i think it made for good fights usually but i can understand why people disliked it.

He is an ATG, and was World Champ for a decade or so and dominated other champs. I'll never forget the Kessler fight (when Kessler was in the top 5 P4P) and then the Lacy fight when Calzaghe started to get old and have hand injuries...i can't remember a fight that we were expecting a Champ to get obliterated (by Lacy), yet the old Champ totally destroyed Lacy to make him look like a 10 year old.

The only thing not on Calzaghe's side was his nationality (not being American or Mexican and not really even English). Had he been American/Mexican he would have been a huge superstar and be worth 10x more.

Great fighter - He and Floyd are probably the only two in the past decade or to dominate for a decade and retire on top and undefeated.

As much as I rate Joe as one of our greatest post war fighters, I honestly never really enjoyed his fighting style it was a little too slappy and his volume made him smother his work sometimes IMO, I appreciate it made him incredibly difficult to beat stylistically though.
