Floyd Mayweather, whose 2015 super showdown with Manny Pacquiao is the richest fight in boxing history, is scheduled to arrive Monday midnight to explore the country’s best beaches, and possibly meet up with his Filipino rival.
While the main purpose of his visit, his first in the country, is rest and recreation, Mayweather might end up discussing business with Pacquiao, whose fight with the unbeaten US fighter generated more than $600 million in revenue.
Mayweather, who won on a unanimous decision, earned upwards of $200 million while Pacquiao pocketed $125 million in the welterweight clash that posted a shattering gate attendance of $73 million and PPV buys reaching $430 million.
The trip to the Philippines is to be made possible by Sam Versoza of Frontrow International, the same outfit that imported the Miss Universe pageant last year.
“I am more than happy to host one of the greatest boxers of all time. It is a privilege to be his host during his vacation,” said Versoza, whose marketing company is into health and wellness.
Mayweather, now 41, retired with a 50-0 win-loss card last year following his masterful win over MMA star Conor McGregor.
Coming off a visit to Singapore and Indonesia, Mayweather is thrilled that he is spending a few days in the Philippines.
“I have heard and seen on TV how beautiful the Philippines is and I can’t wait to see for myself the natural wonders and beauty of your country,” said Mayweather in a statement released by Frontrow.
“I am looking forward for some relaxation, time with family and friends and experience how you guys throw a party for the Money Team,” he added.
A stretch limo is to pick up the flashy Mayweather from the airport, testament to his status as a boxing royalty.
During his Hall of Fame career, Mayweather met the creme dela creme of five weight divisions: super-featherweight (130 lbs), lightweight (135), junior-welter (140), welter(147) and super-welter (154).
His best wins came against Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Canelo Alvarez and Marcos Maidana.
