Comments Thread For: Diaz: Gary Russell in For a 'Rude Awakening Come Fight Night'

Joseph Diaz Jr. took in every derogatory thing Gary Russell Jr. said about him Tuesday. Diaz will use the defending champion's criticisms as motivation during what's left of training camp before their featherweight title fight May 19. Diaz and Russell met face-to-face Tuesday during a press conference at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, the site for their fight.

“Gary Russell Jr. is by far the best featherweight in the world,” Diaz said. “Leo Santa Cruz, Abner Mares, Lee Selby, none of these guys want to fight Russell. They’re afraid of the speed and the counter shots. But I know what I’m capable of doing and I’ll showcase it May 19.”- Diaz

Jo Jo ain't lying about that!

Been saying and thinking that for a long time. The only guys that ever speak Russels name is Diaz and Valdez.

Yep! LSC, Mares, Frampton, Selby, all quiet! I wish GRJ would go to 130 to fight Tank Davis!

Diaz is right, none of them want smoke but he's gonna learn why they all have froze Junior out of the equation!

I think Gary should move up, no one sees him as a risk worth taking besides the belt!

Russell may be too short for 130 but he's clearly more talented than anyone in that division. I'd hope the Santa Cruz-Mares II winner would want to face him but I don't see that happening unfortunately.

All that is provided he beats Diaz which he should but it is a good, competitive fight.

If Loma can step up to 135, GRJ can step up to 130!
