Young fighters who need a trainer should seek out Mike McCallum

Jessie Vargas showed a lot of improvement yesterday. From the way he was setting the table with the jab, to the combinations he was throwing, to the bodywork he was putting in.

    I was impressed.

And McCallum has only been working with him for a couple of fights I think? How much better will Vargas get once they have a few more training camps together?

The Bodysnatcher has a real future as a trainer in my opinion.

I was impressed with Vargas's body work but thought the Extra 3 pounds they made him cut made a noticable difference . If they have the rematch at the Full welterweight limit I got Vargas SD.

I thought Vargas gassed towards the end due to too much unnecessary activity. It really doesn't take much to outwork Broner, but you want to be preserved for the later rounds when Broner always, strangely, comes on stronger. That was a big tactical error.

agreed....good combos and attention to the body

but vargas had a nice lead and let it slip away against a guy that is very beatable

i agree that if you put mccallum with a guy who is more gifted than vargas that he could make that guy great maybe.....but i dunno how much more vargas can do....hes kind of that guy thats just at the level below the elites and probably wont ever get over that hump

Indeed, but I do, however, agree with your point that the Bodysnatcher seems to be a great coach. Think he's working with David Haney as well.

He was giving Vargas great advice especially late, which imo was the reason Vargas boxed well in the last 2 rounds and imo these 2 rounds won him the fight. Next time around the fight must be at 147 and they should work on Vargas pacimg himself and catching breathers every now and then throughout the course of the fight.

Yeah, he was giving useful tips in the corner.

For example going into the 11th round he told Vargas to get back to using the jab. He did and it turned the fight back around.

He had been fading before that and Broner was coming on.

Mike was more than a great body puncher he was also very smart. Not surprised that he would make an excellent trainer.

For sure. He had a very boxing IQ.

James Toney said he was the smartest opponent he ever fought.
