I mean, I'd hate to suggest after reading threads on this objective forum that some Americans have a blinkered viewpoint towards US-only fighters (
) but I was seriously wondering how much longer full-scale coverage will continue when the belts are now very nearly the entire province of East Europe and there are no serious American contenders (cos - sorry to say this - Calvin Brock won't make it to the top)?
The networks and sanctioning bodies have tried to engineer ways round this - they've just given us a bout between a guy who had a winning streak against third-tier opposition (after losing to John Ruiz) and a fat middleweight, who - while skilful - is (ironically) biting off more than he can chew and had only just failed a substance test. It was a nice smokescreen, but if Maskaev gives us a repeat it'll become a battle between Russians and members of former Russian states. How will that work on HBO and Showtime? At least when Big Len was ruling the roost they could throw US contenders at him. Serious question.
