Comments Thread For: Nacho: NSAC Made Right Call To Prevent Golovkin vs. Munguia

Tijuana's Jaime Munguia is, according to Hall of Fame coach Nacho Beristain, one of the young Mexican fighters who has to be tracked because he has the talent to do something big. And because of that, Nacho did not recommend that his handlers throw him to the lions as quickly as they intended. Munguia (28-0, 24 KOs) was a frontrunner to replace Canelo Alvarez as the May 5th opponent for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

The NSAC made the right move by stopping this fight. Kid looks like he's on the right track for stardom but he's only 21 yrs old. GGG and Golden Boy shame on you!

The kid is not promoted by Golden Boy but Zanfer Promotions. The same outfit that promotes 22 yrs old Carlos Ocampo the mandatory to Errol Spence belt. Zanfer is doing a disservice to their young fighters putting them in with top talent this soon both Ocampo and Manguia are blue chip talents they should be brought up slowly not thrown in their with lions.

Do a search on 'Munguia' on boxingscene, and read what actually got reported.

Firstly, Loeffler never filed Munguia with the NSAC, so how did the NSAC approve/disapprove ? What we were told was 'sources close to the NSAC' said that if Munguia was requested, the NSAC would deny. That's not official, nor is it confirmation that it happened.

Also, what we heard on Apr 5 was:

..but apparently Munguia has moved into position to challenge Golovkin on May 5 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas...

                But now we are hearing:

A deal was actually reached for the fight between Munguia and Golovkin - but the Nevada State Athletic Commission put a stop to the contest.

This is not what was reported before, so where does this come from ? Was a deal reached ? Was a request filed with the NSAC (I get the impression it wasn't). Did the NSAC put a stop to it ? (I get the impression they never got a chance to)

Dan Rafael said multiple sources said they had agreed terms.

"Terms had been agreed to for Golovkin to face junior middleweight prospect Jaime Munguia (28-0, 24 KOs), 21, a quality prospect from Mexico, multiple sources with knowledge of the discussions told ESPN on Wednesday."

I know you want to act like Golovkin never pursued the fight but it's almost certain he did.

"However, because Munguia has faced extremely low-level opposition, has never had a scheduled 12-round fight and is not a middleweight it was questionable whether the commission would approve him as an opponent. On Thursday, sources told ESPN that the commission was not going to approve him."

Golovkin tried to pull a kid up that was a WW only a year ago. Ridiculous.
