He is the middleweight champion. Why should he disadvantage himself by fighting a super middleweight champion? He is one fight away from tying the record of 20 successful title defenses and he is almost 36 years old. He should make a title defense against the best middleweight available. Assuming he wins that fight he should fight Saunders next. That would give him a chance to be the only completely unified champion in boxing and break Hopkin's record of 20 successful title defenses if he beats Saunders. Zurdo has good opponents available in his own weight class including other 168 pound champions..

Not now. At least the WBC approved an optional defense. And I doubt the others can order anything on a month notice. Canelo's fight was an optional anyway since Canelo is no champion.
