Canelo Alvarez's suspension for testing positive twice for a performance-enhancing drug could last at least one year. In accordance with Nevada State Athletic Commission rules adjusted in September 2016, that's the minimum penalty for a first-time offense of the commission's prohibition of anabolic agents, clenbuterol in Alvarez's case. The NSAC also allows for that minimum one-year suspension to be shortened by six months if the offender fully cooperates with the NSAC's investigation and procedures.

The Nevada Athletic Commission's official complaint against former two-division boxing champion Canelo Alvarez calls for him to be suspended for one year, pending a hearing next month.

Alvarez submitted two positive urine samples for the banned performance-enhancing substance clenbuterol last month.

The eight-page complaint received by The Times on Thursday precedes a newly scheduled April 18 meeting with Alvarez.

In its filing, the commission labeled the fighter "guilty of foul or unsportsmanlike conduct that was detrimental to a contest."

That contest is Alvarez's scheduled May 5 middleweight-title rematch against three-belt champion Gennady Golovkin at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, an event that now appears all but dead.

As The Times detailed in a story about Nevada Athletic Commission regulations this week, a suspension applies regardless of whether the substance was taken accidentally, as Alvarez has said he ingested contaminated beef in Mexico.

Alvarez will have the opportunity to plead his case to the commission, and a compelling argument could convince commissioners to reduce his suspension up to 50%, making Alvarez eligible to fight in Nevada again by late August.

If he's suspended for 1 year, he'll probably won't want to come back in May 2019 and fight GGG after 20 months of inactivity. He'll probably get a tune-up and fight GGG until September 2019, 2 years after the first fight, if he fights him at all.

I suspect though after they hear Canelo's defense at the hearing and reviewing his proof, it'll be reduced to 6 months, retroactive to the date of his first positive test, making him eligible to fight in August, leaving the door open for him to fight GGG in September.

I think it'll get reduced to 6 months to but i don't think you can schefule fights while you're suspended.
