Now is the perfect time to make the WBSS middleweight tournament

With Canelo out of the picture to next year there are no big money fights for the other MW's. They've all been fighting around each other trying to position themselves for the Canelo fight.

    • GGG
    • Jacobs
    • Charlo
    • Andrade
    • Derevyanchenko
    • Saunders
    • Korobov
    • Lemieux
    • Murata
    • Rosado
    • Monroe Jr
    • Langford
    • Spike O'sullivan

An international tournament and enough American names to get a U.S. TV contract. And if it's seeded correctly and the right names win you can probably get the semi-finals and finals as PPV.

Let Saunders fight Murray and GGG take tune ups in June/July and kick the tournament off in September with the fighters who fought before June/July. All the names I mentioned have fights before June or no fights scheduled.

    (did I miss any names?)

I may be biased being from MN, but I think Rob Brant should be in there!

I disagree. GGG & Canelo make too much money for this money. And all you could really do is do a #1 contender like tournament & even then it'd be hard to get guys in cuz the main guys who don't get in would improve their chances to fight GGG or Canelo in the 9 months between the start & end of the tournament.

I think you only do this in a couple years after GGG has retired so there are less options & there is only 1 guy & 1 fight guys involved will be missing out on.

Or else the WBSS needs more than a $50M prize pool. And I heard the prize pool is dropping for 2018/2019 so I don't see it making any sense. Fun lil fantasy tournament doe.

That's a very good looking list, 160 and 175 are probably the 2 best divisions for this.

Is this thread supposed to be taking place in a fantasy land where HBO and Haymon don't have any contractual rights to any of these guys?

If the prize pool is dropping then it's a waste. But if they could get a U.S. TV contract I'm sure the pool would increase.

The key to the tournament is to get GGG signed. He's the biggest money fight after Canelo. After this suspension Canelo may not fight a real fight until Sept 2019. If the suspension is retroactive to when he failed the test in late Feb then his 6 month suspension will end in late Aug. So Sept is out the window because they can't schedule a fight with a suspended fighter. So you're looking at December at the earliest.

If his suspension kicks in on the date of the hearing then you're looking at late Oct when the suspension is over. So the earliest we'll probably see him fight is probably Feb 2019. And we don't know how the public will react. Maybe he's not the same draw he was before the suspension. Maybe that Wilder-Joshua fight gets cinco de mayo 2019. A lot could change a year from now.

Can we have a lil hope? The MW division is a glamour division. For the right price these fights can get made. How long is GGG's contract with HBO? How many fights does Jacobs have on HBO?

Glamor divisions are going to be the toughest ones to get the top guys for. There's a reason WBSS focuses on weight classes nobody cares about. It's easier to get the top guys to sign on.

Wont happen. Any division with major US promoter presence aint happening. Its how they end up doing it at 118. US promoters all stuck in the past, Sauerlands and Hearn look to the future.
