What's worse, "Quitting" or "Taking a Dive"

So, what is worse, "taking a dive" like Jake Lamotta and other fighters did, or "Quitting" like Liston, and others did?

Also, rate the levlel from 1-10, 1 being the worse type of "Quitting", 10 being understandable, meaning, even though he could of been pushed out, their was nothing left

    Duran, "Quit" against Ray Leonard

Kostya Tszyu, "Quitting" against Ricky Hatton

Ray Robinson, "Quitting" against Joey Maxim

    Acelino Frietas, "Quitting" against Corrales

    Sonny Liston, "Quits" against Ali

Aren't they both essentially pretty much the same thing? But I'd say Taking A Dive is worse.

    Duran vs Leonard - 5

KT vs Hatton - 4 (dude was winning the fight and only had 1 more round to go)

Robinson vs Maxim - 4 Yeah even though Robinson was getting up there in age, and it was extremely hot... I'm just not a fan of quitting

Frietas vs Corrales - 1... straight up ***** move.

Liston vs Ali - 3... That right hand from Ali didn't look all that hard. Ali just had Sonny mentally beat.

This is something that I have always thought hard about. What makes quitting a bad thing, and is it ever acceptable? After watching Mamadou Thiam quit against Tito Trinidad in a fight he was taking tremendous punishment in and his eye was closed, I was incensed initially by his decision to call it an early night of his own accord, then my brother made a statement that would bring into question my boxing philisophy. He remarked "C'mon Ryan, what the **** would you do?" And I was kinda stunned. I thought about it, and was like "If I was in there blind against Tito Trinidad and he's teeing off on me, WTF would I do?" I'd probably have done the same thing.

Sitting on a couch eating Salt and Vinegar chips and drinking diet Coke, many people tend to forget that boxing is a dangerous sport. You can die in there. Make no joke about it, you can get killed if you take unnecessary punishment. Of course, Thiam retired in the bout so as to avoid serious damage and lived to fight again.

However, there are some instances in which you have to really frown on. Duran and Leonard, Duran was not taking heavy punishment, just didn't like what was going on. Hector Camacho Jr, well hes just a *****. Freitas, maybe he should avoid fighting serious fighters. There are different kinds of cases, and each has to be examined individually.

taking a dive in a fight is worse, its disrespectful to the sport, quitting cause ur getting ur ass beat is another thing all together, and sumtimes its not the fighter who quits but the corner or ringdoctor who stop it for them cause they took too much damage.

Taking a dive is the worst. As it is a premeditated move that was already planned before the fight. The boxer who takes a dive obviously should not box. It's apparent that whe a boxer takes a dive he is not concerned with his career due to the loss he will incur in his record. Quitting like thiam did is more acceptable, that eye was ****ed up. The problem with that fight was that the injury happened like in the second round which makes it more difficult as he still had to undergo ten more rounds of Tito fury. Bottom line: Taking a dive is a disgrace and should have some consequences, Quitting because you cant take the punishment is more of moral decision one has to take.

quitting can be done with practical reasons. if you have a serious injury or you too exhausted or whatever, sometimes its better to quit.

there is no excuse for taking a dive, especially in this day and age.

Well, the thing is, you can always stay down from a punch and give the fighter the KO if you know you can't win. But it's gotta be a legit punch that people won't question. Don't rob the other guy of a big moment by quitting or faking a ****ing "liver" punch that lands on your arm.
