At What Point Does A Boxer Become World Class?

Is it when they get a major belt? Or when they clean out their division and unify? Is it when they beat the most feared man in their division?

When they perform (I.e. have a fight that’s more than just ‘quite competitive’) - win or lose - against another, established world class opponent. Fed up with every fighter who drops a decision against a top-level fighter suddenly becoming a domestic level bum in the eyes of the clowns on here.

Good examples: Shawn Porter, Kell Brook, Danny Garcia.

The most objective way I can put it would be when a fighter, after having whatever style that they've developed, show/prove mastery of their tools of the craft, so much so that they can compete/win against the other fighters who have shown mastery of their tools.

Sergey Lipinets is a world class fighter; his style is what it is, but he knows how to gauge his distance, he understands how to set things up from that slip-style shell, he knows how to properly use his jab, he knows of the punch combinations needed to open things up for his offense, knows how to properly react to incoming fire, etc. How good a world-class fighter he is will come down to his ability.

It's like watching the English Premier League, versus watching the run of the mill MLS match. The little things just aren't done right; clean passing of the ball at all times (made worse when defensively passing), clean dribbling, marking the striker, through balls to set up a shot, etc.

Or watching college football, FBS vs FCS (Division 2).

When after being artificially hyped up by his ethnic backers he actually gets a string of convincing wins over top 10 world ranked opponents.

Before that point? Guys will go from nothing to p4p #1 back to nothing without a fight even taking place just based on the crazed fervor of their fanbase & wealth of their promoter. Journalists aim to please both of those last 2 groups & tend to just echo whatever they're saying.

When they move up to higher division and then proceed to defeat the champ.

            Eg: Pac against Dela Hoya

When he beats a world class opponent. It is as simple as that.

I don't think there's just one path to that status. They may reach it by any of the routes you outline above. It could be that they dominate their division, win titles at multiple weights, successfully defend on multiple occasions etc. Ultimately the label itself is somewhat subjective and so maybe the best way of judging is by looking for a consensus view to emerge?

When they win a big fight and make a statement.

                  Joshua KO Klitscko
                  Mayweather KO Corrales
                  Wilder KO Ortiz
                  Thurman UD Porter
                  Garcia KO Khan
                  Spence KO Brook

Some for an example. Statement victories in big fights.
