www.audleyharrison.com caught up with Audley just as he finished working in his gym back in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. Here are some of his thoughts following his win on Friday night.
On training, preparation and working with Buddy McGirt:
“I made a change in training and went to Vero Beach to work with Buddy McGirt. I have been working with him now for six weeks and I feel great. It has been back to basics for me – running on my own in the mornings and evenings and doing the gym work with Buddy in between. It has been excellent.”
“I went to work with Buddy and didn’t have a private training camp with my whole team around me. I went on my own, stayed in a small cosy motel where I cooked my food, washed my clothes and did everything on my own. It was like I was an amateur again and made me realise I had become far too comfortable. This was the best thing I could have done to reawaken my boxing desire.”
On the fight: how you performed, what you need to work on, what you were pleased with:
“I was pleased to get back to winning ways. I thought my jab improved and that is something Buddy has been working on. It was my weakness when I first turned professional but I got away with it as I was knocking people out with my left hand. But now we are working on the jab, developing it and he is showing me how to incorporate it at certain times and not just jump in with it. That improved in this fight and that is after just six weeks of working with Buddy. So that bodes well for the future.”
“I still need to work on the jab, stiffen it up and keep my defence tight. I also need to work the body with both of my hands. But I was pleased overall and during the rounds, Buddy and I gelled exceptionally well. He gave me clear instructions which were good. I trust in what he is saying to me.”
On the future and when you will be back in the ring:
“When I first had the fame and the plaudits I didn’t appreciate them fully. I am going back to basics and am in a place now where I am happy with my boxing. I want to do myself justice in the ring. Losing to Williams and to Guinn was because I beat myself, not because they beat me. I didn’t do myself justice but from now on, I aim to.”
“I fought ninth on the bill in a non-televised bout that was on a show not promoted by A-Force. I now appreciate things a lot more and I was just happy to be given the chance to fight.”
“My wife is having a baby imminently. It could be as early as next week. But I made the necessary and vital sacrifice to move away from our home in Las Vegas to train and get in the ring and back to winning ways. It has paid off. Once the baby is born, I will be back to Vero Beach and am looking to stay busy and fight again in August time.”
Any other words:
“It is great to be back to winning ways and I thank God for the victory. I am far happier now than I have been in a long time in my professional career and I hope people will see the difference. I have taken two steps back but to hopefully make five steps forward.”
“A big thank you to Al Haymon for getting me the opportunity to appear on the show. To Hazel Bruno-Gilbert and Ben Gold at A-Force Promotions for their support and assistance ensuring that everything behind the scenes went smoothly. Of course to Buddy McGirt for helping me to re-find my focus and for the work he has done with me and to my brother Rodney for coming out and assisting during fight week. Big ups to my cutsman Danny Mollano and to John and Becky and all at the QiGong class in Vero Beach who welcomed me into their group and helped me focus on my breathing. And by no means last, to the people who continue to believe in me and who visit this website.”
“Don’t write me off yet. There is still a long way to go but I am back winning and back on the right track. Peace.”
