Does southeast asia have untapped talent?

Seems like they get noticed on the international stage late--should promoters focus more there?

I think Thailand, Philippines could provide good lightweights and welterweights as well.

It's just that there is a lot of untapped talent.

I don't think it's a case of untapped tarent, I think it's more to do with the fact that the tarent might not be there in the higher divisions as it isn't a big part of their culture

I think for those Thailand guys specifically there is more realistic upside to Muay Thai then boxing is part of the issue so plenty of guys never delve into boxing. The overall upside is probably better in boxing, but how many guys can become SSR type guys who are fighting on HBO?

Idk about the Philippines. But anywhere there are a lot of poor people there is some level of untapped talent its a good bet.

It's trainers they need rather than promoters I would say. I could be wrong but I think the only SE Asian country in the all-time top 20 on the Olympics Boxing medal table is South Korea.

You don't need a strong amateur program if the pro game is already strong in the country/region (eg. Mexico). But if there's another route for combat athletes to go down, like in Thailand or Brazil, it's going to be very hard to build a really strong boxing eco-system. You have to create some heroes, build audiences, and develop those centres of excellence like the inner-city gyms in the US.

Promoters are leeches first and foremost and they invest next to nothing in the development of the sport they profit from. Yes, of course you could find gifted 12/13 year old Asian kids who you could bring to a gym in the US/Mexico and turn into amazing fighters. But promoters will never do that. They like to swoop in and sign up the finished product. They won't put anything into producing it.

There's a reason why they are late to be noticed. These guys need time to develop their skills and gain experiences to be at world level. If they are legit contenders, no matter how late they are to be noticed, they will get there eventually.
