Looking back, was GGG vs Canelo worth all the hype it gets?

It was a decent fight but no way did it live up to the hype. People can point fingers and blame either fighter but the fact of the matter is, neither produced. And the only real reason we are seeing a rematch is because it was a "controversial" draw that favored the Aside.

Also, I dont really see the rematch going any different, maybe Canelo throws a few more punches and GGG throws an occasional bodyshot.

    Thoughts?

Most highly anticipate fights never live up to the hype. Learned my lesson ever since De La Hoya/Trinidad. Though GGG/Canelo did deliver in terms of being a good fight, just unfortunate that judges muffed it up again. Hopefully there is a more definitive outcome in the rematch and by definitive I don't mean Kovalev/Ward II.

Not sure I'll ever pay for another $70+ PPV again though, especially when most of them have garbage undercards.

No, the fight highlighted much of what is wrong about boxing today. Both fighters fought cautiously, expecting the judges to award them the rounds.

Which is ******. It was a close fight without the action we all expected. Somebody should have gone for the stoppage in order to secure the win. Didn't happen.

The rematch will be the same thing. No, the hype didnt deliver.

Im definitely not spending $70 on it this time around. And I agree it was a good fight but to be honest I thought Rungvasi vs Estrada was better and it was free (kinda).

What? It was an amazing fight with some of the highest level exchanges we’ve seen in some time. The problem is they’re both great fighters and it wasn’t as simple as throwing a feint to land a punch. There were a lot of layers to some of their exchanges and it was beautiful to watch especially with the ferociousness they displayed. That was high level calculated violence despite what it may have seemed like.

It’s never going to be easy to just t off on these guys at that point in their careers and sometimes all that can be landed is one big punch or two.

I’m actually really excited for the rematch. Their chins held up and thus we were able to get a great display of boxing from both guys. Lots of wrinkles to their game.

People really think they weren’t trying to end the fight with some of the punches they landed? People act like it’s that easy to just “go for it”. Like the other guy is gonna let him lmao

green k, you summed up my thoughts...

Honestly, I like Canelo more than GGG (trust me its not saying much) but GGG disappointed me moreso, I kinda figured Canelo would fight the way he did, I just though GGG would show a lil more attrition and bring a dog out of Canelo. But like you said, each guy was content thinking they won rds instead of winning the fight.

I respect your opinion and I can see how some wouldve truly enjoyed the fight. My issue is, Rungvasi and Estrada are arguably at the same skill set and each of these little guys left it in the ring with the high skill level you are talking about. Seemed to me like Canelo and GGG were looking for the judges for help. I understand at that level 1 small mistake can end it but no risk no glory and thats why we are seeing a rematch...

Its kind of a bitter sweet thing. It didnt deliver but it still did good enough to bring attention to boxing. Idk if the rematch brings the same interest (maybe less) but cant blame the fighters for not going phone booth style

With all due respect to Rungvisai I’m not sure I’d consider him on the level (skill wise) of Canelo or GGG. Estrada? Yes. That’s not to diminish Rung but with his size advantage and Estrada’s lack of equal firepower, it’s a different dynamic. Rung didn’t have the equivalent of a canelo or ggg power shot coming back at him when he made mistakes and that’s a massive advantage to have over someone (the inability to be truly hurt by them with a singular shot.)

Again, not trying to sh it on Rung. I’m actually super impressed with him and think he’s getting scary good in short amounts of time but it was a different type fight. It was a stellar fight though and I cant argue with either of their performances.

Also, thanks for keeping it civil. Really appreciated. Despite that, I still respectfully disagree lol

I thought it was a good fight for all the hype. Byrd scorecard casted a dark cloud on a great fun fight. I will buy but I have fight parties and people chip in so the price isn't a big deal to me
