He looked old, and that he was just couldn't keep up with Cleverly, who was very fit, but lacked power.
Maybe the injury was legitimate, but with Braehmer's record of pulling out of fights, it wouldn't be a surprise if he did quit if he felt like the well was empty.

Brant wasn't exactly a strong opponent for Brehmer anyway, so it's not like that win means he would be a cert to win the tournament.

I'm not arguing a particular point here, I just haven't been overly impressed by Braehmer in the fights I've seen. I know he's an awkward southpaw with a powerful left counter, but he's always looked like he wants to fight at a very slow pace to me.
Personally I would make Groves the favourite for that fight. Smith I've never particularly rated anyway.
The only way I could see Braehmer beating Groves is if Groves's suspect chin failed the test of one of Breaehmer's powerful left hands.
When analyzing a potential Braehmer/Groves fight, I picked Braehmer over Groves because his punches seem very straight with a lot of power on them and he has that same high guard Badou has, he's very aware and veteran-like defensively. He picks his shots very well, seems very durable and his punches looked crisp and accurate.

Although Brant wasn't as good as people expected, he was getting co signs from other TOP fighters like Spence as well as even Roy Jones Jr for a reason, they saw something in him in the gym he was going to work in sparring against some quality opposition. Again he came up short in the end, but I attested that more to how good Braehmer really is rather than Brant just not being good.

Keep in mind he's also coming down from Light heavyweight, he looked quicker and stronger at 168 from what I saw in the Brant fight. He seemed like the "sleeper, dark horse" to me.

Styles make fights though and I actually had Eubank Jr beating Braehmer if they were to have matched up in the finals.

Disagree. He’ll get outboxed, sure, but Froch showed up Groves’ vulnerabilities against a puncher. Just got a sneaking feeling that Smith is going to take him out late.
