Adonis Stevenson: I'm The King, Not My Fault Kovalev Pulled Out

“It’s not my fault when Kovalev pulled out. It’s not my fault when Hopkins went on HBO. That’s the game. I don’t care and I don’t listen to people like that. I’m the king of the light-heavyweights. When you’re the king, for sure you’re going to be criticized. You have people who don’t like that. People talk, talk, talk. You can talk, but I’m still the champion.”

Stevenson's promoter, Yvon Michel of GYM, backed his fighter - stating that it's very hard to get A-level opponents to face Stevenson.

“The division isn’t only Kovalev or Hopkins. It’s deep and talented. He has fought anybody willing to get in the ring with him,” Michel said. “It’s just a perception. He avoids Kovalev, which isn’t the case. He avoided Hopkins? Not the case. Pascal? They all had opportunities to fight him and all turned it down. To cover, their promoters and themselves kept pretending it was the other way around. It seems to be a pattern, people turning against Adonis.”

Kovalev's Promoter: Stevenson is 40, We Want The 'Real' Fighters

“Sergey managed to collect three titles without a tournament and from his perspective that’s what we’re going to try and do,“ explained the promoter. "The young guys in the division are real fighters and we’ll get deals done”

Kovalev unified the WBO, WBA, and IBF versions of the light heavyweight championship. The one that alluded him was the WBC which still belongs to Stevenson (29-1, 24 KO’s). Duva feels the ship has sailed on that fight and wonders what Stevenson is doing with his career.

“As far as Stevenson, if I had a nickel for every time he said he wants the fight, we literally went through everything and then he says [manager] Al [Haymon] said he didn’t want to do it. I think this week he’s 40, so happy birthday Adonis. So he’s 40 and I just don’t know what his future is and I don’t think he does either. That story is sadly played out and gone. It would have been terrific and apparently he didn’t want to make history."

Two of the biggest and mouthiest yet mediocre fighters on the planet. Steveson and Wilder. Stevenson, the one armed fighter and one trick pony has beat NOBODY and has run from Kovalev for years. He's a punk. Kov would beat his ass every day any day.

Duva: 'Irrelevant' Stevenson Has No Interest in Fighting Kovalev

“Sergey would love to win that title,” Duva told BoxingScene.com, referring to Stevenson’s WBC championship. “His goal is to start again and win all four titles. And it’s kind of nice to start with the same one he won the first time, the WBO title. As far as winning that WBC title, I sincerely doubt that when the day comes he gets to fight for it that it’s gonna be [owned] by Adonis Stevenson. Maybe [Stevenson] will fight someone who could beat him, and then [Kovalev] would fight whoever that is. But Adonis Stevenson has proven time and time again that he has no interest in ever fighting Sergey Kovalev.”

“The younger fighters are gonna have to fight him if they ever want to be the man,” Duva said. “I don’t see any other route for them. If somebody beats Stevenson, then that person is gonna have to automatically detour over to Sergey. That’s the only way to go. So he’s gonna sit there at the very top of the heap now and let them all come at him.”
