Comments Thread For: Mikhalkin's PED Suspension Nearly Made Him Quit Boxing in 2016

By Keith Idec - Igor Mikhalkin nearly quit boxing in the spring of 2016. The Russian light heavyweight was just 30 years old and had lost only once as a pro. But the European Boxing Union suspended Mikhalkin for two years because he tested positive for meldonium, which was added the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned substances earlier that year...

never seen him fight b4 but I don't think his chin will hold up against kovalev..I hope he gives kovalev rounds and make him work to see where kovalev is physically in terms of gas tank and mentally in terms of facing adversity no matter how little it is, at some point in the fight..if he can do that which is a big ask then it's a win for him because a lot of people expect this to be a cakewalk for kovalev

So right after the Russians got busted for helping all their athletes cheat, this guy got popped and wanted to retire. Why am I not surprised?? Now, he is facing a fellow Russian with no ped testing. Kov himself is 0-2 in fights with ped testing.

The Russians need to come out and be truthful. Admit they all use peds and they have to because they cannot compete with the rest of the world if they do not. Then fights like this would do better, people would pay to see the punishment they each dole out with no restrictions on peds. Right now, it is two guys who were both bad-ass until Russia got popped and then each has started losing and questioned rather they should even try to continue boxing without their Ivan Drago juice.

The whole meldonium thing is still such a joke. It was legal for 50 years then they "banned" it & pumped out multiple revisions before just admitting they had no idea what they were doing and retroactively exempting everyone for a year.

I think most pro boxers are on *real* PEDs which makes it extra tragic that so many were busted for something barely more potent than taking a bunch of B vitamins because they banning agency didn't understand how long it remains in their system.

And let all the armchair experts on PEDs make pathetic comments and call Russian's cheaters. You people don't sound like boxing fans you sound like gossip columnists. Go to TMZs website. This is about the sport of boxing. #casuals.

EXACTLY. The first salient point I have read on this site about this extra powerful vitamin, yet all the experts on PEDs, of which this site is full of will call Povetkin and Mikhalkin cheaters. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE FACTS STFU.

to be fair Povetkin tested later for Ostarine which is a legitimate PED... but the meldonium thing, yeah, he got screwed. His levels were well within the legal range & they cancelled the fight anyway.
