  • Comments Thread For: Arum: Beltran Might Make First Title Defense Versus Verdejo

Felix Verdejo could get that elusive shot at the WBO lightweight title after all. Promoter Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com that if Ray Beltran beats Paulus Moses to win the vacant WBO 135-pound championship Friday night, his first defense could come against the undefeated Verdejo. Puerto Rico's Verdejo (23-0, 15 KOs) first would need to defeat Mexico's Antonio Lozada Jr. (38-2, 32 KOs) on March 17 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

actually don't expect a KO. Beltran gets boring UD as Verdejo stays on bike whole fight

Sounds like a dream scenario to me.

Loma-Linares and Beltran-Verdejo on the same card, building up hype for the winners to fight in August or September, then winner vs Pacquio in December. Meanwhile, Mikey fights Easter, and winner of Pacquiao vs the tourney winner faces Mikey early next year. By that point it will be ready for PPV because either Pacquiao or someone who beat Pacquiao will be involved, and it will be for all four belts at 135 unless it's Pacquiao.

Verdejo still fights? I'd give him another year (of activity) before he takes on Beltran.

Even though I don't trust him as far as I could throw him, if Arum seriously think Verdejo is ready for a title shot vs. Beltran, how about making Lomachenko vs. Verdejo for May 12th, and the winner faces Beltran?
