Comments Thread For: Boxing, Concussion and Depression - Time To Open Our Eyes

I once read an archetypal story/analogy/puzzle that always makes me think about the issue of concussion and depression in boxing. It goes a little bit like this: a group of children are killing lice on a temple's steps, when approached and asked what will happen to the rest of the lice, one of the children says: "We kill the ones we see, the ones we don't see we take away with us".

There is depression and depression. Many grades of it. I'm not sure Fury ever had it but if he did he seems to have gotten over it now. Could he have gotten concussed in bare knuckle fights when he was a teen or a lot younger?

Apart from James Toney who are the ex champs and contenders who now show brain trauma in their older years?

Being depressed or just generally ****ed up is cool right now. I get it.

And until you can come up with scientific facts I'll dismiss every single of those claims as being in line with our modern victim society.

The brain is such a fragile piece of the body I think there no doubt the continuous abuse that many elite boxers take results in many developing CTe, Punch drunk , depressed or suddenly turning bat sh.it crazy ( Jermaine Taylor )

I wouldn't be suprised in the future as the world embracing a more pussification approach that a effort isn't made to ban boxing because of what it does mentally to the combatants

          exactly this

There is evidence to suggest that a proportion of ancient soldiers experienced what we would now diagnose as PTSD... Difference is, they weren't handing out medals to traumatised soldiers for being so brave and 'speaking out'

What makes me depressed is having to wait for female bouts to finish to get to the good stuff after I paid good money, and I get a concussion by ****ing my head against a brick wall in frustration

Oh yes, suffering with depression is such a cool and happening ailment to suffer with.
I’ve never read such a misinformed, ridiculous and plain ****** comment in my entire life.

Even more dangerous than the concussions are the small, repetitive hits a boxer takes in every fight. And it's not just in a pro fight. Think of how many hits a boxer takes in amateur fights or in sparring sessions.
