    Two main reasons:

    1. More money from sanctioning fees for belts

    2. Lower weight classes are hard to promote, because most people don't like seeing midgets fight. - so they invent weight classes that are basically a toilet break apart and call their champion a "4 weight world champion" - much easier to promote and have on p4p lists.

3 pounds isn't even one and a half kilograms - it's a ****ing joke and anyone who disagrees can suck balls to be frank. The UFC separates classes by a minimum of 10 pounds whereas boxing milks the chit out of weight classes

If I were to decide the boxing weight classes, they would be named and weighed as follows:

      Heavyweight: No limit
      Cruiserweight: 220
      Middleweight: 200
      Welterweight: 180
      Lightweight: 170
      Featherweight: 160
      Bantamweight: 150
      Flyweight: 140
      Paperweight: 130
      Pinweight: 120
      Atomweight: 110
      Minimumweight: 100

12 weight classes, named without the ****** "super/junior" additions. I can't imagine a better system than this, TBH.

Do we really have to recognize the IBO now? https://www.boxingscene.com/forums/v...p?pg=champions

            Its moving that way.

I'm a old school cat who remembers when the WBO was new & seen as a bs joke secondary title. It was seen by most as below the main 3, but above the NABF & USBA for a long time. Somewhere along the way the WBO become a real title.

I see the IBO becoming close to being accepted as a real title now. There is lil doubt in my mind we will be talking about the "5 title holders" in the near future cuz I see nothing changing with less titles thats for sure.

I recall a few high profile boxers like Cotto and Calzaghe starting holding and defending their WBO titles and gave them credibility by association.

                Yea I think you're right.

I was trying to place the timetable that all went down & came up blank, but that sounds like a solid estimate of when the changeover happened.

And I see a similar thing happening now with some of these bigger name guys being hyped as the IBO champion. Problem is they still got some highly bs guys with their title, but I suppose that would change fast if it does become more legit.

That said I still feel kinda sad for boxings future when I think of some kid in 20 years thinking Brian Nielsen was a legit HW title holder at one time cuz he held one of the 5 main titles of that era back in the day. And there are a ton of awful examples to make like that cuz once the IBO title becomes a legit title to the masses these guys who won a 3rd rate title back in the day will be retroactively boosted up by people that don't know any better.

I sometimes think there should be a super heavyweight division, but I think it would diminish the heavyweight title. WBC Heavyweight champion of the world is the best title in world sport for me, especially if it's a unified champion.

I wouldn't hate a super HW division if they did it like MMA does it.

I think an unlimited division is a freakshow anyway so saying Heavyweight is 200 to 265 & Super HW is 265+ makes a lot of sense to me.

I think it lowers the freakshow non-serious, non-legit guys at HW, but it still allows the freakshow guys to have a division to prosper in themselves if they are legit guys. I think a Super HW division would be a lot of fun even if the fights came around less often.
