Is blocking punches an underrated defensive maneuver in recent times?

All too often, fans in recent times over value flashy moves over effective moves. Thus, they overrate defensive boxers who rely on using extra unnecessary movements to evade punches. And the boxer performing all these extra unnecessary movement can often be at a disadvantage and not be as effective as someone who is using simpler means to defend themselves.

Meanwhile, a boxer who is blocking punches effectively and successfully, like Murat Gassiev did against Yunier Dorticos or how Gennady Golovkin does very frequently, aren't often viewed as defensive specialists and their defense gets underrated / under-valued. Even though they get hit just as less as another boxer who uses flashier, exaggerated movements to accomplish the same result (Billie Joe Saunders against David Lemieux).

Charlo blocking a 1,2 combo ( same hand)then countering with a Check hook ( same hand)was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

If Doritos had the physique of Lara or Sullivan Barrera they would have broken through Gassiev’s guard. Doritos height played against him. When Doritos throws his right his arm is going downward. Lara, being shorter and more athletic, pops his right upward that sneaks between the palms of the gloves, so breaking high guards is easier.

A full sized big Middleweight Erislandy Lara would retire Arthur Abraham even in his prime.

This applies to the offensive side too.

Lack of understanding boxing fundamentals and physics.
GGG positions himself well to have opponent throw unleveraged punches as well. So a lot of those combos that land on his head are all really just flashy non-effective punches.
When coaches say Canelo is a slapper, it just means he chooses to not use kinetic energy.
So when I read how Canelo has 'more' skills. I think in what department. If he was more efficient he'd work for 12 rounds.

Winky Wrighs high guard is a great example of what you're saying and a lot more effective due to being able to counter after blocking

When you block/parry with your arms elbows shoulders roll and counter jt or mayweather or catch and shoot ala winky wright

Blocking with your face is not included.

The way that Gassiev was catching and blocking yesterday, was like a trainer using pads. It was nice to say the least. We never got to see Dorticos go to the body enough to see how effective that would’ve worked against Gassiev. But in return Gassiev work nothing but body for the first 4 rounds. He zapped the energy from Dorticos. He definitely chopped down that tree

this is why fighters like duran and tyson never get credit for their elite level defense. boxers that apply pressure or are KO artists never get props for their defensive skills.

Not at all, Mikey Garcia is excellent and parrying and blocking. No flashy stuff, just all fundamentals at the highest level. Canelo too

Then if Dorticos had the power of Lara, he would have been koed in 4 rounds.

Dorticos is 95% KO for a reason.
