Comments Thread For: Can Spence Overpower Peterson, Demolish Him Way Matthysse Did?

By Keith Idec - NEW YORK The lopsided odds on their fight might lead you to believe Errol Spence Jr. will demolish Lamont Peterson the way Lucas Matthysse annihilated him. Matthysse dropped Peterson three times with left hooks, once in the second round and twice in the third. The Argentinean knockout artist needed less than nine minutes to end what was billed as a highly competitive fight in May 2013 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City...

peterson has the skills to box and stay on the outside all night but something tells me hes gonna brawl to prove a point. thats what spence wants. he should force spence to chase and cut the ring and just tie him up when he gets close make him constantly reset. but spence is a dog and very big for a welter hes gonna maul peterson.

Spence will KO Peterson easy, I expect Peterson to look like Chris Algieri the squeal, part II.
Unfortunately beating Peterson won't bring him any closer to Thurman because Peterson won't do much to improve his brand or ability to produce $$$. Thurman isn't going to fight because he doesn't need to, he's on the A side, he's the draw, he has options and the risk simply doesn't match the reward. Spence is no more of a draw then Paul Williams and Floyd avoided Paul Williams for exactly the same reason, the risk was not worth the reward. I don't think I'm going on a limb when I say I expect Errol Spence to be forced to move up to 154. If ever a fighter I saw that needed a promoter... it would be Errol Spence.

Peterson can't stay on the outside and foot work is only mediocre. Spence is too long, too much reach and at some point Peterson is going to hold up his gloves and lean on the ropes and that's when he gets koed.

If I had any real money, I would put it all on Spence to win by ko/tko. He doesn't just win, he hurts his opponents. He can ruin careers. The only question is what all injuries are Peterson going to sustain in this fight?
He will be probably be coughing up blood for a month. And that is still better than what happened to the last guy Spence fought.

I don't get the purpose of this article. Why would he compare the two fights when the second one hasn't happen yet? He even said the KO loss was an anomaly in Peterson's career. Spence and Matthysse are completely different fighters. Matthysse is a KO artist... Basically, a one hit wonder. Spence grinds his opponents down by applying a lot pressure and consistently going to the body.

With that being said, Peterson is a different fighter than the one that lost to Matthysse. I'm not saying he wouldn't lose to that version of Matthysse again but I doubt it would end that quickly. I can see Spence stopping Peterson but I would be surprised if it happen within 3. To be honest, I think this goes the distance.
