Polish identity was built on ethnic nationalism. You have to be an "ethnic Pole" to be Polish. Izu or whatever his name is isn't Polish in terms of nationality, only his citizenship is Polish. He will never be a Pole and no one who understands Polish identity will ever consider him as such.

Joshua is a different case because the British are not a real (ethnic) nation, they were built on civic nationalism. In Eastern Europe, nations were built on ethnic nationalism.
