Comments Thread For: Kovalev: Bivol is More Talented, Stronger; Will Beat Barrera

Sergey Kovalev respects Sullivan Barrera's unconventional decision to fight Dmitry Bivol instead of facing him March 3 in New York. Barrera, the mandatory challenger for Bivol's WBA light heavyweight title, chose to battle Bivol in the opener of HBO's doubleheader that night from The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The Cuban contender could've challenged Kovalev for the WBO championship in the main event for more money than he'll make for boxing Bivol, but declined.

Yeah same... i think Barrera picked the wrong style match up for him... i got Bivol by decision after knocking Barrera down maybe even a couple times, scorecards being around 115-111, 114-112 or 115-112

Well Barrera would have taken the fight if your promoter Duva didn't offer 100k less from what was offered last time and ask for Barrera to extend his expiring contract with her. Duva can't afford to pay good fighters to fight Kovalev, only way Kovalev has gotten fights against Ward, Hopkins, Pascal, was because Kovlaev had to take way less money for those fights as the B side. Barrera has seen that Duva isn't looking out for his best interest and wants out.

            Exactly.

Given that information how can you blame Barrera for not taking the fight?

I think Bivol will look really good in this fight. Barrera is a good measuring stick for Bivol going up the ladder against better competition but it wouldn't shock me if Bivol kinda dominates this, stops Barrera midway-late.

Because he still would have gotten way more money for fighting Kovalev than he is for fighting Bivol.

But Bivol in my eyes is just as dangerous so Barrera gets props from me.

I don't know about the money being "way more."

Certainly not enough to offset the fact that he would have to extend his contract with Main Events.

By doing it his way if he beats Bivol then he can demand more to face Kovalev. And if he loses to Bivol then at least he isn't chained to Duva and can test out the market as a free agent.
