Comments Thread For: Wilder Aims To Use Angles, Speed, Movement on Luis Ortiz

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (39-0, 38 KOs) feels very good about his physical advantages in the upcoming world title defense against Cuban puncher Luis Ortiz (28-0-1, 24 KOs). Initially, they were were set to fight in November, but the contest was pushed back after Ortiz failed a pre-fight drug test. Now their fight is being lined up for March 3rd, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

He needs to fight him like he fought the first Stiverne fight, keep him at arm's length and watch for the counter. That Wilder wins this fight. Most other looks we've seen from him will get him caught w/ something he never saw coming.

Luis Ortiz has the longer reach!

It's nearly the same and this is why we must watch fights and learn what we're looking at rather than just looking at boxrec. Ortiz does not fight tall like Wilder does. Wilder has the more EFFECTIVE reach. Ask yourself, "who is more likely to want to win a jab war?" Clearly Wilder because his stance and posture are such that he gets a lot of reach and can keep opponents at a distance.

Ortiz is a counter puncher. He fights more squared and stays almost coiled so he can strike when the opening is there. Hands are close to the chin, not pre-extended like Deontay.

This stuff isn't hard to see. You just gotta watch the fights and not think you can look at it on paper.

if ortiz can roll back the years then he'll beat wilder easily. Unfortunately hes a good 15 or so years past his athletic prime if his rumoured age is true. Saying that, he still might be good enough to beat wilder

I could definitely see the sweet science Wilder in this fight, Ortiz is a live opponent and he is durable as well especially inside, Wilder is going to keep him at the end of his jab and keep him honest with the occassional right hand.

I get what you're stating, but Ortiz has the straighter and more textbook punches. Wilder's punches aren't as straight.

Good match up regardless! I think Ortiz, if he is anywhere near his best should be able to beat Wilder due to his timing and counter punching abilities. However, if he is deteriorated from all of the inactivity and from aging, then Wilder might be in for a good night's work.

Yea, it's hard to gauge where Ortiz is at. He's a better talent in many ways. But, time waits for no man and I'm guessing he's truly in his early 40's. Wilder is just a wild card. You really don't know if you're getting the first round ko beast or the guy who use losing on the cards and finally lands a bomb.

Wilder reacts poorly to pressure (head back, hands in the air) but that's not Ortiz's comfort zone. IF Ortiz pressures him, I think he takes it. But, most likely, Wilder 1+2's him all night to a cautious victory.
