To me, Kovalev is already the top light heavyweight, bar none. Who is better?

He's also a pretty good boxer. I see Kovalev more of a skilled boxer with power than a brawling fighter like GGG and Beterbiev. Of all the known Eastern Euro fighters, I believe only two are better boxers than him: Usyk and Lomachenko.

He's the man to beat after Ward has left the division.

I'll root for him whoever he fights next.

I already have him as the top. He was the top before, lost to Ward so he dropped to #2. Then Ward retired so he went back to #1

But I gotta think that of his next 4 fights, it would probably include at least 1 of Stevenson/Bivol/Gvozdyk/Beterbiev so certainly possible he establishes it again as clear cut.

Are you a parody account? You have Tank Davis all over your account, but you're talking about paper titles. What kind of title did Tank win vs Pedraneverheardofhim. Now he's openly ducking the true champ in his division, something Kovalev never did.

If Kovalev was black, he would be your favorite boxer. If Tank was white, you would consider him a joke. #Facts

Exactly. But he is a fanboy of Ward so he has to twist things. Ward would have lost to past prime Kovalev if the rules were enforced. Now Kovalev is 34 so there's no guarantee he can still be as good as he was... I think his stamina will cost him in the future... but he proved he was better than Ward, even at 33 years old (and yes, the drop off from 32 to 33 is significant, and of course, Ward's style is less age dependent than Kovalev's, since Ward doesn't rely on volume punching and Kovalev does. Plus, the acne on Ward's back for the rematch indicates that he probably had help staving off aging for that fight).

Ward's entire defense is bending over below the waist, but I bet if Kovalev used that as an excuse to repeatedly punch him in the balls until the ref gave him a TKO win, you would be singing an entirely different tune. So yeah that's right, keep it moving... cuz you know I'm right.

He didn’t want to fight and beat up Kovalev, he landed some shots in between his fouls and eventually when nothing he tried worked, Ward went all out on Kovalev’s nuts to “win” it. And Kovalev was too hesitant to foul back in fear of being disqualified, knowing how dirty and corrupt the officials are.
Great post. This is exactly what happened. Now, people are correct to point out Kovalev wasn't at his best, but even at 60% he still had plenty to beat Ward with objective refs and judges. Even with a biased ref in the first fight, Kovalev still pulled it out, but then the judges robbed him. And that was not him at 100%. We've seen him gas badly in every fight since Chilemba, so it had nothing to do with Ward, it started with Chilemba. Maybe Kovalev aged, maybe it was bad habits, maybe the meldonium ban messed him up. I have no idea. All I know is Ward never fought him at his best, but even Kovalev not at his best still proved to be the better boxer, it's just that the corrupt NSAC officials gifted the win to Ward twice. But Ward did not box impressively at all in either fight, he won less rounds than Kovalev, and scored less knockdowns, and landed less punches, and less powerful punches, and less legal punches. Kovalev outclassed him across the board despite being at disadvantages across the board. Incredible actually.
