Comments Thread For: Matthysse: If I Had a Choice - I'd Want Danny Garcia Next

Dangerous welterweight puncher Lucas Matthysse (38-4, 35 knockouts), 35 years old, is still looking for some payback from 2013, when he lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Danny Garcia (33-1, 19 KOs) - which took place on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez underdog at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Matthysse believes he will get a step closer to that goal on January 27th, when he faces undefeated Tewa Kiram at The Forum in Inglewood, California. The vacant WBA "regular" welterweight title will be at stake.

The rematch should have happened immediately after the first fight, as the outcome was affected by Matthysse getting laced in the eye in the 4th or 5th round. It's not as juicy now at 147 pounds four years later, but it's still basically the best fight either one can make along with maybe facing Khan, which would also be fireworks with either guy. Mikey Garcia vs either would also be nice. But Matthysse-Garcia definitely needs to happen again since there was no legitimate outcome to the first fight. It all changed when Matthysse got laced in the eye. The commentators got it wrong the night of the fight when they said it was a punch, it wasn't a punch, he got laced in the eye with Danny's glove. So a rematch is definitely in order, for the sake of fairness.

If Victor Ortiz can beat Devon Alexander, then Ortiz vs either Matthysse, or Khan, would also make a good fight. Actually, I take that back. He would quit so early vs Matthysse it wouldn't be worth the ticket. But against Khan, who has less power, Ortiz might make for a classic. Omar Figueroa vs either Ortiz, Matthysse, or Khan would also be awesome. Not Danny I think Danny is too big and not chinny like Ortiz is to compensate for being too big.

Called it!! I just hope he gets by Tewa Kiram he should beat him but it's not a guarantee!! But I'd like to see a rematch between him and Garcia and having a belt will more than likely make that fight happen.

Why? What kind of awful person roots against The Machine? He fought everyone as soon as they would fight him, and always gave very entertaining fights. He was just unlucky in his career where getting laced in the eye by Danny, and then having that injury resurface against Postol, cost him titles twice. He was winning both those fights until his orbital broke. He fought through it the first time, but was a shell of himself, and thought better of it the second time same as Kell Brook. Just bad luck. I would definitely like to see him against any top guy who either doesn't have a huge speed advantage over him, or doesn't have a big size advantage over him. Anyone else, Matthysse can at least be competitive with, and I'd like to see it.

if lucas gets the belt it might make sense for garcia too. since thurman ain't fighting him again anytime soon. i think after vargas he'll fight porter.
