Comments Thread For: Evander Holyfield's WBC Tournament Draws Heavy Interest

By Thomas Gerbasi - The fight game may slow down around the holidays, but as soon as Evander Holyfield's The Real Deal Boxing announced their WBC welterweight tournament just before Christmas, company COO Eric Bentley's phone and email got hot. "We've had about a dozen to a dozen and a half applications thus far and I've probably had about 15 to 20 different fighters reach out and ask for more details," Bentley said last week. "So it's been going pretty well so far."

As I posted yesterday I'm curious who is backing Holyfield where does he get the money because he has none I'm suspecting wbc's behind this because he still associate with them from what I have read... the problem with tournaments they never play out well the last one in Europe was okay but I never got to see about nothing was televised to the states that I'm aware of... they were fortunate as well there was no injuries or cuts that can destroy at ornament...

None of this will matter if no top Welterweights are in the tournament , and we know most won't be.

For all intents and purposes, I think the intent here is to take a mix of fringe contenders/gatekeepers and hopefully end up with a 'top welterweight'. As was stated the fact it is a tourney style will give more shine as opposed with single bouts, and I agree. For context's sake, let's use an 'example' tourney sans top 47 fighters (in no ranked order):
          1. Omar Figuaroa
          2. Konstantin Ponomarev
          3. Andre Berto
          4. David Avanesyan
          5. Yordenis Ugas
          6. Devon Alexander
          7. Louis Collazo
          8. Bakhtiyar Eyubov

Again this is just an example. None of the considered 'top welterweights'...but if the layout is anything like above, shii....I'm watching.

Cool. I'll watch even if they're unranked. One tournament is better than the mess we have right now. Also, bring back the contender series - an addictive show that aired before the UFC's Ultimate Fighter and then just went off air.
