The World Boxing Association (WBA) announced in January 2016 that it would work to reduce the number of WBA champions in boxing's 17 divisions and it has done so. The year 2017 began with 32 champions and closed out with 25 champions in the 17 divisions, although it is worth mentioning that when the sanctioning body started the plan to find a single champion in each weight class there were 42 champions.

Murata doe
the justification the WBA provided for ordering Golovkin/Jacobs was to ensure that middleweight had only one "champ"
if they are actually heading in the right direction..... then they sure are taking their time about itComment

There's never been one belt. Even a hundred years ago there was still IBU, NYSAC, NBA, etc.
The only way to have one belt is for a UFC style league to emerge, leaving all of the existing belts in the dust.
PBC is the best chance for that to happen and even if it ever does, you'd still have the ABC belts being recognized in the rest of the world.Comment

UFC didn't have to replace a century of tradition of their sport being a worldwide free for all governed by gun for hire independent organizations.
If PBC can land a big FOX deal, perhaps in conjunction with UFC, while maintaining control of SHO as well, and if PBC can convince FOX & SHO to only recognize PBC champions, within a few years, the sanctioning bodies could be severely crippled in the US. But the risk is that you hand dozens of world titles to ESPN & HBO on a silver platter and if the public rejects the new titles, you're beefing up ESPN & HBO's line up. Right now, ESPN is just WBO land, while HBO has to take the scraps of whatever WBO Arum doesn't control and whatever WBC/WBA/IBF Haymon doesn't control.
Don't see Haymon pulling the trigger on PBC titles until HBO pulls out of the sport. Right now, it's to his benefit to continue to slowly accumulate as many WBC/WBA/IBF titles as possible. He knows Arum has a monopoly on the WBO, so it means HBO eventually will have nothing except for the tiny weight classes Haymon & Arum ignore.Comment

42 to 25 seems pretty serious.
When Jacobs lost to GGG on March 18 that could have eliminated the secondary MW title, but 2 months later the WBA staged a fight between Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam and Ryota Murata for a vacant title??? Whats up?
This is how the WBA has done things throughout this entire process. They get rid of the interim title first and then they get rid of the super title last.Comment

We're happy to explain. Thank you for asking. When Jacobs fought GGG, N'Dam was already the interim champion. When GGG wins, N'Dam's next fight becomes for the world title and the interim title was eliminated.

But that doesn't make it okay to lie about them. N'Dam's next fight was upgraded because that is how the WBA has been handling this all along. You get rid of the interim title first. You get rid of the super title last.Comment
