Once a guy starts talking retirement he already has one foot out the door. He isn't into the grind 100% and that's bound to come out against a tough opponent.

    Same with Gary Russel Jr.

It's ****** when boxers talk about retirement. Even if you plan to retire soon it's better to keep your mouth shut about it. The fans aren't going to get behind a fighter who is going to retire soon.

Saunders knows he'll never beat anyone better than Lemieux...

Although Saunders deserves some kudos, it sounds like he's getting ahead of himself. Beating a sub-par Lemieux doesn't put him on the same level talent wise as Canelo, Jacobs, GGG, Charlo or even Andrade.

I would love to see him square off with one of those guys in 2018, and with all the belts tied up in the Canelo - GGG rematch way into next year, then that leaves Saunders as the gatekeeper to the unified champion.

atlast, someone with some sense of reality! Saunders will hang on to that cheap belt for dear life, I bet he don’t fight for at least another year.
And the cars etc he was selling never involved buying them first.....probably stolen from some hardworking tax payer.

This might prove prophetic as GGG, Canelo or Jacobs could send him off into retirement should he get those fights before he is 30.

Actually come to think of it, there really ought to be more clamor for BJS - Jacobs. GGG-Canelo II is almost definitely going to be made I figure, so isn't that the next obvious MW fight?

I respect elite fighters that take the decision to walk away with their faculties intact. Often they're turning down large sums of money that they'd be unable to earn elsewhere, they're also sacrificing the attention and fame that comes with their status as a boxer. They're also walking away from the only life they've known and they'll have many around them who are urging them to stay and continue reaping the rewards of all that hard work. I think it probably takes a strong character to do that funnily enough.

If I were at that level I hope I'd have the strength to do the same thing. Achieve the goals I'd set for myself, ensure my financial secutiry and then hang up my gloves whilst I still have my faculties intact and enjoy a full and happy life with my family who would no longer have to fear the worst every time I walked into the ring or even a sparring session.

Let's be fair Saunders just boxed a slow plodder who got stopped 2 times before that. Nothing bad about that, it's a good win but let's see Saunders facing a guy like Jacobs to see what he's really about before putting him next to Pernell Whitaker, FMJ or Lomachenko.
