He can become a star but he's still work in progress, he makes some technical mistakes and we still don't know how durable he is, how his stamina at the world level is and how he would deal with a crunch moment. Still way too early to judge, he's still only 19 years old so they should give him like 10 more fights against solid opposition before they match him against someone in the top 10.

Can't become a star without beating fighters with a pulse, it's not just about the looks, you have to go through that grinder in this sport.

The kid is fan friendly and has potential, but he too green at this stage to make any kind of judgment. Oscar, of course, is going to hype him big time hoping for the next big meal ticket. Let's see how this turns out.

Way too early to know. Been following him for a minute. We'll see how he develops. Like Haney and Stevenson, I'll reserve judgement until he's truly tested.

Being named this year's ESPN prospect of the year puts him in good company, but even that's a mixed bag of success.

Garcia still has years to go before he's ready to challenge legitimate contenders. He has way too many bad habits that a more experienced boxer can catch onto and not enough knowledge to understand his own limitations at this current stage in his career. Which could be due to some arrogance on his side.

I believe his dad is his trainer which isn't necessarily a bad thing. That said I think his dad should look to get him some sparring with some actual champions in and above his weight class to him humble him a bit and show him that he does have flaws that can be taken advantage of and teach him what he needs to work on.

Just like Shakur Stevenson, who I'm not overly impressed with at this early stage in his career, I can respect that Shakur from what I can tell understands that he is still very vulnerable to these more established fighters and as such has been sparring with them to help him clean up his game and see what he needs to take out and add to his craft.

                    Prospect of the Year

                    17. Diego De La Hoya (23, Mexico, junior featherweight, 20-0, 9 KOs): He has the famous last name because he's a first cousin of Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya (also his promoter), which means he'll always have a target on his back. But while the name opened doors, his smooth skills are what will carry him. A Mexican national team member, he had more than 250 amateur bouts and went 4-0 in 2017, including a near-shutout decision over ex-bantamweight titleholder Randy Caballero in September. One negative: He missed weight by 4½ pounds for a Dec. 14 ESPN main event, causing the bout to be canceled, so it's fair to question his discipline.
