As for the future, speculations arose that this could be Cotto's last fight as a junior welterweight and his promoter Bob Arum confirmed it may be. "The idea was to keep him at junior welterweight for the rest of the year," Arum said. "But there may be a change of plans and he may fight at welterweight
"You know, I don't want to say that right now but it could be," Cotto said. "The difficulty making the weight is getting harder and harder every time but I think it's time to move up." Regarding potential future opponents Cotto stated that "you can ask my promoter Bob Arum. They're the ones who choose who I'm going to fight." The tentative plan had been for Cotto to make a fall title defense against former lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo, potentially also at MSG. Those plans have been put temporarily on the back burner now though after Castillo's inability to make weight for his rubber match against Diego Corrales and the subsequent complaint that was filed against him by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
