Why do they call New York the "Mecca of boxing" when.....

...they haven't had a big meaningful fight in years? I understand the history there but it's history. I think we can all agree that Vegas is the Mecca of boxing currently but why does New York still call themselves that? In terms of boxing, they are far from the Mecca. Hell, even the Stub Hub Center has had more meaningful fights. Thoughts?

Golovkin vs Jacobs wasn't meaningful? Helps to learn about the sport before trolling.

As far as the 'Mecca' title goes, I won't bother to explain how time changes things.

Good fight, wasn't a big fight. Golovkin and Jacobs isn't a mega fight. Canelo Vs Cotto, Canelo vs GGG, Mayweather vs Pacquiao, etc. I'm talking mega fights. Helps to know what you are talking about

I call it that because I turn my American flag themed carpet towards NYC when I pray

The "Mecca of Boxing" is Madison Square Garden specifically, not NYC in general.

Does it change the fact they rarely have big fights?

MSG WAS the Mecca of boxing. MSG had some of the biggest boxing events back in the 50s 60s, and 70s. Probably had bigger fights than was happening in Vegas. After the Bowe/Golota post fight riot they went away from boxing for many years.

I agree completely. The centre of boxing is Las Vegas, the MGM to be exact, whereas it was Caesars Palace previously and then before that, MSG.

However, even Las Vegas is starting to be left behind, as London and other European destinations are becoming the centre of the CW division and has been the centre of the HW division for 10 or more years.

The "Garden" is the mecca of boxing because the biggest fights from the late 20's up till the 70's occurred at that venue.
It's just part of boxing history no need to get upset.
Boxing has a very meaningful past and we celebrate the history. If you don't want to that's fine but try to get over it.
