Top Rank Commentator: "Mayweather Did A Disservice To Boxing"

During the Rigo vs Loma fight one of the commentators said when he was discussing Loma's loss to Salido:

"and this is where Mayweather did a great disservice to boxing in placing too much emphasis on the 0, but Tim all great boxers of the past like Ali had losses"

For me he nailed it on the head in that boxers today are too overly concerned about a loss, the fans bought into it with their "40 and 0" mantra, berating a previously praised boxer for a loss, and becoming too fixated on records. Result: less great fights and trilogies like we had in the past, and the best avoiding or stalling fighting the best for years.

Yet it was ok to laud Marciano for all these years and then when the new kids are on the block and wanting a bit of the same, its a disservice somehow.

    Laughable.

The last two big boxers to retire (Floyd and Ward) have better victories than anyone else currently fighting.

Exactly, its time to pay more respect to TBE and SOG.

As a proud American I love supporting the best that America has to offer

Unlike those fake unpatriotic americans who downplay our best talent and prefer foreigners, particularly eastern european boxers.

it was espn brain kenny, not top rank.

Brain Kenny has no horse in the race he just talks boxing from his point of view, which I usually agree with.

Brian Kenny has a right to his opinion but fighters are responsible for their own actions. To a certain extent Mayweather did coast toward the end of his career but he also paid his dues in the beginning....

Because you beat everyone you face doesn't automatically say the 0 is priority, its a conundrum because its said only when there is a 0 loss resume its not said when the guy is beating the best, if Lomo beat Salido he would have 0 losses, he lost and never beat that guy in front of him it means nothing as far as choice of opponent.

Its once again a fans hyped idea of boxing, not whats real to the fighters.

I think the attitude took over a lot more when Mayweather was on top.

It definitely didn't do boxing any favors.

The best should fight the best.

Winning is not the only thing that matters.

It's about who you fought and the risks you took.
