Comments Thread For: Lomachenko vs. Rigondeaux Generates Big Rating For ESPN

Last night's fight between Vasiliy Lomachenko (10-1-0, 7 KO) vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-1-0, 11 KO) delivered big on ratings, making it the second highest-rated boxing telecast on cable in 2017, according to Nielsen overnight ratings. It was an electric, full house at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City that watched two of the top ten pound-for-pound fighters in the world, both two-time Olympic gold medal winners, battle it out for the WBO Junior Lightweight World Title. Lomachenko wowed with a sixth-round TKO.

Great number but it also had a good lead in with the Heisman ceremony. I didn’t think the atmosphere was all that electric. And the fight wasn’t good at all but still a great number.

I was at the fight and the atmosphere was pretty live leading into the fight for their intros and everytime they'd show them on the big screen. The fight itself didn't have many moments to get the crowd excited though. The crowd was into the Diaz fight but the Conlan fight also bored the crowd.

Boxing needs to take a note out of the UFC book and just find a way to put bigger fights on regular cable.

The exposure is so much greater.

My brother and all his buddies are football players. Never followed boxing and now they love lomachenko because they saw him fight on ESPN

I guess Pacquiao is still quite the draw. Horn was relatively unknown when they fought and still holds the record...

garbage numbers. 5 months to boost this hype with no proper pressers or special ESPN Boxing productions.... had it did, ESPN could possibly have been at 2million views.... but they chose to keep it quiet because they didn't want to risk showing their viewers a Super Bantamweight possibly beating Loma... I mean, no Atlas tells you enough about their insecurities along with them showing Loma's clinching game so that the commentary team could focus on narrative in the fight. These are all preplanned measures to boost their house fighter

PBC tried it but got so much hate. Arum is basically doing the same thing with support. At least the 2 might come together in the future for the sport to make big fights.
