Sad to see THE Green Belt of boxing history turn into Al Haymon's puppet, or at least that what it's started to look like the last decade. I hope I'm wrong about that. Maybe I am. It's probably not that bad, but it just looks bad sometimes. I won't say they're Al Haymon's puppet, but this feels like a non-measure. This feels like just another stall tactic. There is nothing to investigate. Stevenson has been holding the belt hostage, while Alvarez has gotten paid well to be the dutiful teammate in Stevenson's stable whose job it is to occupy and block the mandatory position forever to allow Stevenson to keep holding the belt hostage.
There is nothing to investigate. The WBC needs to strip Stevenson, and allow the #2 and #3, Alvarez and Gvozdyk, to fight for the title. Then if they want to do Stevenson a favor, they can put him at #4 and give him first chance to fight the winner of Alvarez-Gvozdyk. Give Stevenson an immediate shot at the title. This way, Stevenson still gets to fight for the title, but it ensures the fight actually happens. Because WITH the belt in hand, Stevenson has not proven himself up to the responsibility of actually fighting the top challengers. But let Gvozdyk win the belt, and he will actually be willing to fight the best.
That's what sanctioning bodies should be doing more of in the future, if they want to make more money AND grow the sport, which is a win/win. Stop helping duckers get titles. Get the titles into the hands of guys who will actually fight anyone... including the duckers! That way, the duckers will still get their shot at the belt, but so will everyone else. And that way, for the duckers to actually win the belt, they will actually have to beat someone real. And then if they do that, maybe they'll have more confidence afterwards and stop being such huge duckers.
Something like that. But for now, in order to really max out the potential at light heavyweight the next year, what should be the best division in the sport, the first and most important thing that needs to happen is for Gvozdyk and Alvarez to fight for the belt. That is the only way to force Stevenson to actually fight a real fight if he wants to be champ again, whether fighting the winner of that, or any of the other champs. All of those options would be good by me. But him holding the belt hostage and never fighting anyone good is ruining the division, and that's a shame because this division could actually be something special and historic if not for what Stevenson has been doing to it and is still doing to it.
