This is a tricky question bc its really who is the most cerebral boxer .

Two of the top boxers come to mind and thats Lewis who also had Steward (Huge advantage ) and Vitali Klitchko . I would say Vitali Klitchko bc he practically trained himself ,most of the time you heard his trainer saying your doing good just keep doing what your doing with little instructions .

Ironically when the two met it was more of a slug rest than a chess match ,also interesting to note both play chess ....Klitchko on a competitive level which most likely gave them both great advantages in a thinking mans game at top level.

If i had to choose a past time boxer i would probably pick Archie Moore who also knew boxing inside out and could make adjustments at any time in the ring .

The topic here when scientific / cerebral is discussed is the abilities to read an opponent and break him down with multiple tactics using ring IQ and generalship .

In Vitalis case he had superior positioning ,took minimum punishment and knew where and when to engage and when to put himself out of harms way using every punch in the book to work against his opponents . Add in his 6'7 frame and it made him that much more difficult to fight .

      1 . Vitali Klitchko

      2. Lennox Lewis

      3. Archie Moore

      How good was Vitali ?

“I remember watching Vitali train when both brothers were training in L.A.,” said Steward, who also trained Lewis. “I watched him spar and I noticed that he gets a feeling of when a punch is about to come and he moves out of position just as this is happening, and at the same time he throws a punch while he’s moving.

“I thought to myself, 'No wonder he’s so difficult.' I had never noticed this before. When Lennox fought him, I thought his height would be a problem but I knew that Lennox had handled taller fighters before so I wasn’t worried about it.

Go ahead paper trainers disagree with the above ? lol

      How good was Moore?
      *
“He was great,” Emanuel Steward said shortly before his own untimely death. “Some fighters intimidate opponents with a big punch. Moore intimidated fighters with his skills. He was a thinking fighter, very intelligent and analytical. He was patient. He took his time.

There was very little wasted energy or movement. As a fight went on, he’d analyze his opponent, find his weaknesses, and figure out what he had to do to break him down. He was very strong physically, crafty, not particularly fast. He’d slip, parry, throw a stiff up-jab, get in close. He was always in range where he could make a move and punch. Then, at just the right moment, he’d let that sneaky, hard right hand go and knock his opponent out. He knew how to fight. And he had a lot of heart.”

How good was Lennox Lewis ?

"How does Lennox compare to the all time greats? He defeated every fighter that he faced, no other heavyweights other than Gene Tunney and Rocky Marciano can make that claim. He is one of only 5 men to regain the lineal heavyweight title.

Only Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes won more "title" bouts than Lennox Lewis, dating from his days as WBC champion.

In terms of quality of opposition Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson and Vitaly Klitschko are better than Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers and Gerry Cooney who are the best fighters that Larry Holmes beat. Lewis next tier of competition Razor Ruddock, Ray Mercer, Tony Tucker, Oliver McCall, David Tua and Tommy Morrison are better than most heavyweight champion's competition outside that of Muhammad Ali." Again anyone wish to call Lewis average ? Any trainers on here ? (hint hint ...you know who you are you dope! )

      *Monte Coxx ......

Who really is as a nostalgic nut as they come (i cant even agree with him on the Ali comparison bc i know Lewis defeated better opponents than Ali did ) but the above statement says alot . And i posted that bc i know the overatted cards are going to be coming so i know to post EXTRA on threads like these . lol
