The current junior middleweight (154 pounds) champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), Miguel Cotto, reacted to the recent statements that were made by Felix Trinidad, who was the head trainer for former three division world champion Felix "Tito" Trinidad. According to certain statements that Trinidad Sr. made to the media, his son was the spearhead for American promoters to place a greater emphasis on boxing talent in Puerto Rico.

Felix Sr. is right. Also, Cotto isn't from Puerto Rico. The only island he's from is Rhode Island.

Interesting topic. Of course, Puerto Rico had great fighters before “Tito,” but it does seem to me things really only took off in that market during his career. I would say that’s attributable to two factors, the prominence of PPV, and the rise of a highly marketable fighter in Trinidad. A perfect storm, if you will. PPV wasn’t a real force before Felix came along. So, yes, I would agree with Senior. Cotto and those that followed “Tito” can thank him for their exposure and subsequent financial success.

Can we at least all agree that Tito Trinidad would beat Cotto at 147 all day every day in their primes?

...I totally agree, here in Puerto Rico, Tito will always be the People's Champ, and Cotto will always be remembered for being a fcukin' drunk, and for beating up on his wife...
