Comments Thread For: Schaefer Frustrated By Lack of U.S. Television Deal for WBSS

The bout between George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr, which takes place on February17th at the Manchester Arena in the U.K. sold-out in seven minutes. This match-up is part of the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series super middleweight tournament. There's no questioning just how much interest there is in this event in Europe.

        Schaefer really can't understand why?
Then he's obviously not the brilliant mind that some people think he is.

Very true. If these guys had more exposure on american TV when a buz was created earlier in their careers, they would have been more known now and that would have catapulted their acceptance to bigger networks covering them. I cant count how many times Usyk's name has come up on Boxing scene and other sites and I hadnt even seen him cause a number of his earlier fights were not televised. Along with other really good fighters who are very talented that I didnt see till later because of no real exposure in the US. So yeah, they need buildup from the get go and then that earlier exposure will pave way for bigger things on HBO and Showtime.

Im sure the cost to pick these up is not high and likely draws better than some of these crap cards they are putting on HBO.

Are you telling me people in America know Machado? Seldin? Roberto Ortiz? O'Sullivan?

I've been watching the Cruiserweights, but I'm not surprised at all that US TV hasn't picked up these fights. There are limited fight dates, and nobody is going to invest in a tournament featuring a bunch of guys nobody has heard of. Plus, you have to figure HBO isn't planning on working with Schaeffer. His only option was really Showtime.

I'd like to see the last fights of the tournament on TV, and I think these could be fun to watch for casuals to get them excited about boxing. I wonder if paying a media outlet $1M - $5M to show tournaments like this would be a good investment for building Schaefer's fighters.
