Comments Thread For: The Road To Nowhere: The Sequel?

By Tris Dixon - A FEW years ago I wrote a book called The Road to Nowhere. It was a heck of a journey and had been almost a decade in the making. At the start of the century I travelled to the USA to become a boxer. I was not very good and would never have gone far, but I loved the sport. After a couple of years of moving around the east coast I was on my way to train with Micky Ward in Lowell when I was contacted by Boxing News magazine...

This is why I can't stand certain boxers, they are millionaires & still behave like pestilent children; some can't accept losing with honor, some are detestable human beings in the worst way possible, some waste their talents entirely & others are lowlife losers who squander all their money on opulently frivolous garbage.

But for every single 1 of those listed there's many others who are living in poverty & sacrificed everything for that 1 shot; most unfortunately come up way short & yet most the time they are paid miniscule amounts of the earnings of the event despite being absolutely necessary in a sport where contenders like shebransky 4 example that was fighting 4 the title vs kovalev needed to fight no hopers to pad his resume & get a title shot,

his last 2 fights were vs opponents with combined record of 20-15,his last fight was vs a guy whos record is 10-0-1.

And yet despite this being the norm rather than outlier, those guys probably have spent more than they've earned in their career, & they surely will never be champions nor elite nor will boxing likely ever give them any return on investment whatsoever literally,& yet u have guys crying about getting several million per fight ffs...

Excellent article. One of the best I've ever read.

Simply because it was a nod to soo many fighters who, for a multitude of reasons, either didn't receive the recognition, fame, reward or simple praise for the journeys they endured attempting to climb the precarious ladder of boxing.

It is so refreshing to read some of the names listed, and I was delighted to see a picture of one of my all-time sentimental favorites: 'smokin Bert Cooper'.

Quite a detour from the usual headlines about what diet the latest poster boy is on, or what friggin Beyonce Whiner has tweeted.

        Thank you for this article.

            +1000 !
Could not have said it any better.

The fight game is a hustle both in and out of the ring.

More often than not the reward is hardly worth the risk and yet they continue on for the love of it.

It always makes me cringe when a poster refers to a fighter as a BUM!!

To me it says a lot more about the poster than the fighter they are trying to malign.

I have always been a fan of the sport and every chance i get i give credit where it is due.

Nothing galls me more than to see a fighter who has sacrificed everything only to get robbed blatantly with absolutely no recourse.

Boxing will always be a tough hustle and i have nothing but respect for all who take up this "sport".

I care less what your nationality or religion is.

I have as much respect for a Sullivan Berrera as i have for an Andre Ward.

I have as much respect for a Carlos Takam as i have for Anthony Joshua.

I have as much respect for a Luis Arias as i have for GGG

I have as much respect for a Luis Collazo as I have for Terence Crawford.

Heck one of my favorite fighters of all time has to be Emmanuel Augustus.

The only "fighter" i do not care for is Conor Mcgregor

So many hard luck stories and fighters we forget about as fans. I only recently read that something like 1 in 3 pro fighters end up with CTE dementia too.
