Comments Thread For: Sullivan Barrera To Be Offered The Option of Kovalev or Bivol

After disposing of Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in two rounds on Saturday night at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, it looks like Sergey Kovalev will be making a relatively quick return in the spring. As BoxingScene.com reported earlier, Kovalev will be returning on March 3rd, also at the Theater in Madison Square Garden.

    Barrera's management:
"Good news Barrera, we have a couple of options lined up for a fight in March next year, I'm sure it will be a career high payday for you!"

Barrera: (excitedly) "Yes, yes, just tell me already! Who's it gonna be??"

Management: "Okay...so you can choose between getting knocked the **** out by Sergey Kovalev at Madison Square Garden on March the 3rd, or getting knocked the **** out by Dmitry Bivol....take your pick."

Awesome all around... and good for Barrera who can now stop complaining about the lack of a title shot.

Unfortunately, not sure his best course.

The easier fight of course is Bivol... But... after seeing Barrera have a challenge with Valera... who in real life is likely in his 40s... I think Barrera would have his hands full with Bivol.

With Krusher... I don't believe he is ready.... watching both fight back to back... Barrera is far slower and would be a punching bag for Kovalev.

In either case, a loss to either would be horrible for his career.

A loss to Kovalev, who is arguably THE best LHW at the moment he may bounce back from.
A loss to Bivol? Career ender I am afraid.

HAHA... you beat me to it.

From the money side, I think Barrera would have more money fighting Bivol... IN Russia...

World of Box would put up good money for it.

Barrera should choose who he thinks is the easier fight on paper it's Bivol I think he'll be the choice.

Getting knocked out for 300-400K is still good news... 90% of pro boxers get beat up for far less.

I thought Barrera did better against Valera with the exception of the knockdown than Bivol did with Valera. So Bivol is a very winnable fight for Barrera. Kovalev will be obviously the favourite against Barrera but that's based on beating Shabransky who Barrera stopped first. Barrera keeps getting overlooked and keeps getting victories, even the Ward fight wasn't the lopsided fight that some idiots would like you to believe. Look at Ward in b/w rounds 9,10 and 11 against Barrera and you'll know what I am talking about.

Really hope it's Bivol-Barrera. That is a fight that could generate a new star (Bivol), plus it frees up Kovalev to take on bigger fish ASAP since he is already 34 and fans want to see what he has left before he gets even a second older. Whereas if Kovalev fights Barrera and wins, it doesn't create a new star at all, because Kovalev is already at that level. But for Bivol to do it, would bring someone new up to the level, and offer something new to boxing fans. Not that beating Barrera impressively would prove absolutely nothing for Kovalev, but it wouldn't prove nearly as much as if Bivol beat him.

Plus, for Kovalev-Beterbiev to happen in March, Kovalev-Barrera can't happen in March. That's the real issue here.

                Kovalev-Beterbiev
                Bivol-Barrera

Doubleheader. March. Make it happen boxing. Hopefully Stevenson will fight one winner, and Jack fight the other winner, and then the winners of that can fight. Make it happen boxing. I know you won't let me down and overmarinate everything until Kovalev reaches the second decline of his career before making the good fights. Boxing would never do something like that! Ahem Canelo ahem Floyd ahem Ward ahem Stevenson.

I hope that's what we get, although I could settle for Kovalev-Jack instead of Beterbiev for the March fight, which would make the Beterbiev fight perfect for July.

You're referring to the Kovalev-Ward fights as one, and Ward fans, correct?

I think he meant Barrera vs Ward...

I think Barrera did pretty well there.
