Comments Thread For: Barrera 'Bitter' About Shabranskyy Getting Title Shot Before Him

It'll be difficult for Sullivan Barrera to watch a fighter he knocked out get a title shot before him Saturday night. Barrera knocked out Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in the seventh round 11 months ago, but he'll box before Shabranskyy battles Sergey Kovalev for the vacant WBO light heavyweight title in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Cuba's Barrera told BoxingScene.com that Ukraine's Shabranskyy doesn't even deserve a title shot.

This fight should be an eliminator not a title shot. Barrera should also be fighting an eliminator and the winner face each other. Instead Main Events petitioned this to be a title fight for Kovalev. Both fights shoulda been on the same card to build up the title fight.

And I completely understand Barrera on this one! That's just ridiculous. Shabranskyy is obviously a cherry-picked opponent for Kovalev.
Here, let's look at the WBO rankings: wboboxing.com/wp-content/pdf/1710WBORankingasofOct2017.pdf
What are they for, I wonder?

Under no circumstances should Barerra have turned down a fight with Kovalev, title or no title! If you're at 175, and Ward has retired, you don't turn down an opportunity to fight Kovalev (or Stevenson)! "So stick a quarter in your azz because you played yourself!" That being said, the WBO is the worst! I don't give any credibility to the WBO (or the IBO) Champions! WBC, WBA, and IBF, also have their issues, but I consider their Champions, the REAL Champs!

he refused the kovalev fight, not once but twice, contract called for another fight for 300K had he won, so that would have made 600k and wins over a stunned kovalev, barrera has nobody but himself to blame, he'll be making a lot less and would still have to beat bivol for less money to get a title

It's Barrera's own fault at the end of the day. Why would he pass on the chance to fight Kovalev? Obviously Main Events wanted to keep it in house but Barrera passed on the chance to Main Event on HBO.

You can't fault Golden Boy Promotions or Slava. It's a chance that they had to take and I'm glad they stepped up to take it.

Risk taking is a part of the sport and right now their is a bad trend of fighters not willing to take it.

All this needless anguish. These titles are not what titles once were. At one time, a title fight was signed as a title fight. Now, any fight gets title recognition as soon as they create an opening, or a new title. The titles are so worthless and so many, that they become chips in a pot instead of game winners. The minimum now is 5 titles, 1 or 2 titles is a dud.
